    itunes SLOW in w3j

    Hi, i have a t2500 core duo in my new w3j.
    I have heard that itunes encoding supports multi threading, but when i encode (256kbs AAC) it runs between 5x and 10x which is painfull slow. My old pentium M 1.7ghz did between 15x and 21x. What's going on.
    I am runing power play on high performance, and when i look at the CPU metre in Task Manager it seems that the two cores are balancing each other out - i.e. when one goes up the other goes down. that doesnt sound like multithreading to me. that sounds like splitting the load??? still, even if it were fully using one core which is 2.0ghz and has a 667mhz fsb it should be well faster than my old pentium M. My friend has a sony SZ with a 1.83ghz core duo and he gets bad results in itunes too.
    this seems odd for a cpu that hits 1m 12 on superpi.

    Has anyone else gotten anything faster?

    You probably have error correction turned on. That slows things down significantly.

    no, thats not it - i have that turned off. has anyone imported music on itunes faster thant this using a w3j or a core 2?

    Don't use itunes. Use some other encoding software. Problem solved.

    do you know another program that does high quality encoding and downloads track info?

    windows media player for listening to music. That will download your track info. Then get a good quality free third party encoder. I use an ATI encoder that I managed to get for free.

    can i ask where you got it from? sorry - but i do encode a lot - and i am a bit annoyed with the lack of dual core programs.
    Is this a problem with the cd drive? 24x read is pretty good, that should mean that the disks should encode at 24x

    my friend has a dell xps with a 3.6ghz cpu and a very good cd drive - and he gets speeds of 30x

    Whoah there. Are you talking about encoding and transcoding files, or burning disks? Burn speed depends on your cd drive and what kind of disk you are burning too. Unless you've got a very old system, nothing else should be bottlenecking the burn process.

    I got the ATI encoder with my ATI desktop hardware. I think you can download it from their website for free, but you need an ATI card from the X series or later.

    Anyone interested in free encoders... just do a quick google search. Google is your friend. You can find almost anything you could ever want on google. I'm sure you won't have any problems locating a good, free, media encoder.
