i've had nothing but trouble with asus in the past 3 years. i've had 2 a8jps sent in twice over 2 years to have their hinges replaced, and they're due for another replacement very very soon.

my G1s has been in and out of there twice for overheating problems, and the only thing they do every time is to replace the heatsink and/or thermal paste, and send it back performing exactly like it was before i sent it in. this is the third time i'm sending it in, and quite frankly i'm not accepting it back, be it fixed, or a new one. an old dusty WORKING computer will do is what i told them.

all in all, i'm never buying asus again. i'm trying hard to get rid of all 3 asus notebooks me and my brother and cousin own, and move to something better. most likely jumping on the GT725 bandwagon, or something sager/clevo.

    thanks for listening, /rant.

you seem to have bad luck with asus. I would recommend clevo/sager as they have good build quality and some excellent customer support resellers.

Join the club. Its quite big on NBR. My next lappy will not be an ASUS. I will look for Clevo/Sager anything but Asux :).

well, the fact that the forums are divided by brand makes "fanboy" posts very scarce, if not nonexistent.

it just so happens that many asus owners are looking into moving on, hence being informed about their future purchases. being one of them, i certainly dont blame them.

i own 2 asus computers and have not had any issues with either of them. One is an older model F9sg they dont sell anymore and the new one is an asus n80. the cooling in the n80 seems to be quite efficient but i have not had time to test it in a long gaming session where it really pushes it. honestly this is one of the firsts posts ive read with overheating issues. i was not aware this was a problem.

sager is a good choice too but thier 14 inch line isnt really up to date like the 15 inch and higher is. i wish they would impress me with a powerful 12 with dedicated non craptastic gma graphics.

    hehe you're in luck then

the G1S is notorious for overheating, and asus is notorious on dragging the particular problem all the way to oblivion before they do anything about it.

the intraweb is piled with G1s horror stories

I'm sorry you're experiencing trouble. I still love Asus' motherboards and recently purchased a G50vt-X1. Has a very solid feel too it, people I'd shown it too were impressed over the second HD bay and ability to replace the CPU (not to mention the very solid feel of the thing), and runs very nicely. I'm glad I bought the extended warranty, in case anything should go wrong. I hope not...

the problem with G1s' is not the shutting off (even tho it happens sometimes), its the fact that it will stay at 97 degrees and it will throttle up and down that mark, while the games experience "pulsing" slowdowns in the process. they become unplayable, and it sure doesnt take too much load to reach 97 degrees.

earlier version of the drivers (or bios) allowed the temps go all the way up to 110 degrees. with the change came a shot in performance, and the unplayability of the "pulsing slowdowns" of the 97 degree threashold. in reality, it was a lose-lose situation, and im still paying for it (havent touched the G1s in months, its going back and forth in ASUS)

just to give you an idea, i was running the GPU downclocked by 30% just to be able to play a game, but guess what, after a while, it still went up to 97 degrees, and the pulsing slowdowns were still there. that just did it for me.

i learned my lesson, and will research (among others), GPU temps before deciding to buy a laptop. i'm also staying away from ASUS since they proved to be as incompetent as any other "budget" laptop company.

well, you could try other brands like acer, hp, dell ..

maybe on dell section, there's a guy who have posted 'good bye dell'
maybe on acer section, there's a guy who have posted 'good bye acer'
    etc.. :)

reliability of laptop is really a pure luck, but on your case, 3 in a row is a nightmare experience... asus repair service is a hit or miss..

I can sympathize. My ASUS F3Sa has the notorious keyboard crack developing slowly -- I will replace that just before the end of my warrantee period. And battery power has always been very poorly managed. I might just replace the thing with a 1000HE and stop lugging around a desktop replacement.

But I've got to ask, will you be able to find a quality notebook from another manufacturer that does not use ASUS parts? Their motherboards are everywhere.

No surprise, the G1s had a lot of problems especially with the GPU that was probably the most problematic asus ever. Alot of it had to do with the Nvidia fiasco though.

Yeah, my G1s has always run hot. Not the greatest thing, I'm surprised the reviews at the time didn't really pick up on that at all. However, while I've had some issues with heat, it for the most part has served it's duty as a gaming laptop faithfully.

I will say, Asus laptops are known to generally have crappy battery life.

they are actually improving on that front now, the Asus N50/N80 had pretty good battery life in its class hopefully all the models asus makes will receive good power management

Well, I just picked up a Asus 904HA netbook...and that gets like 7 hours haha. Though it's not the same as a full size laptop getting 4+ hours. My biggest complaint about Asus would have to the battery life. If that went away, and the price points stayed the same...well, they'd be back on my list.

nvidia fiasco or not, its still an ASUS notebook, and the past 2 times it was sent in for repair, it was sent back performing exactly the same as before.

I've had an M51Va since October. Actually for most of that time Asus have had it trying to get it to work. It started blue screening the first week I had it. They say they've replaced bits but it comes back not working. I can't wait for bye bye Asus. I've stopped asking for repairs and started asking for money back. You couldn't pay me to use another Asus. Wanted a notebook and got a paperweight.

    Absolute rubbish.

The G1S seems to be a particularly bad screw-up for Asus. 3 out of 4 problem threads I see here are about the G1S. It's a shame when they put out a bad model and then drag their feet addressing it, because they do such a great job with models like the N80/G50/G71.

I"m not trying to defend Asus or say that the laptop you had were not defective BUT the A8S and the G1S were 2 of Asus' notebooks that had a higher than normal number of problems. I'm not saying you should give them another chance but I avoided those models. I've had soo many Asus notebooks and havn't had a single problem yet (knock on wood).

I've owned W5Ae, V6V, V6Va, W5Fm, Z62F, W3J, Z84Jp Z84Fm, N10J About the only thing I can fault Asus for is (In Canada at least) is they were rather pokey fixing a V6V for a friend of mine, other than that I love them to death

I think with asus laptops, one either hates them or loves them. Not much middle ground. My experience is they need ALOT of care and attention but stick with it and it can be rewarding.
