Just wondering how this g1s holds up in games that I may play. like World of Warcraft. in the hightest settings and everything maxed except for the sampling (keep it at 1x) how high can you get the framerate? example: looking up, the best I can get with my g1 is about 122fps.
what abbout C&C3 or Supreme commander?

I used too... then I got my soul back.

(I hate the whole change to the pvp system when they made battle grounds anyways, that about ruined the game for me, then as a max lvl just raiding for epics was boring and life eating)

Im hearing good things about this lord of the rings MMORPG :p

kk enough of the hate, so anybody knows how well this game plays on the g1s? What about C&C3? I know I can play with everything on max except the sampling, but it moves slow (which is a good thing, as I can keep up with it) but on my home system, I know it moves about 2-3x faster with all the options on, so I know its a fps is lower I just don't know how to check it in C&C3.

Ok, here are my two cents,

I have the G1, not the G1S...and thusfar...both WOW and CC:Source played at max setting show ZERO lag.

    I don't own CandC3.

I don't know if this helps or is even pertinent to you because these were my impressions with my older Sager with 7800GTX but:

I do a lot of CnC3 LANing and I've noticed that I need to turn down my settings EVEN FURTHER to get playable frames in game. One problem with the engine (if it's a problem) is that the entire game is literally only as fast as the slowest computer.

I now have a G1 but it's a sad Panda in RMA land before I have even gamed with it!

I just wanted to add though it frustrates me how many G1s owners are out there and not posting there gaming settings/impressons with the newer hardware; I honestly could give a rats ass about their 3dmark overclock scores!!!

Same I don't give a crap about 3dmark scores albeit them being an indication, I want to see how the G1S handles games , what settings what resolutions etc.

I don't understand why the people who own the G1S are not posting their gaming results.

Only ones so far that have done a good job and posted benchmarks of it in games are "mryerse" and Ken "Gentech PC". Thanks to them, but for the rest of you who own this machine, could it hurt to post some gaming benchmarks ...

i totally agree. The problem is, that there is no real way of comparing the results in an easy way (as you can do with the 3DMark-scores). I would heavily suggest that there is at least a "notebookreview.com"-standard, like running a spefific level of BF2 using Fraps, or CS:S or whatever. Or maybe a demo that can be downloaded freely (so everybody can do the benchmark).

I will get my G1S in about 2 days, and i will gladly do several in-game benchmarks. (Though GenTech did a pretty good job here. But again, i don't have a real comparison).

About WoW: Well it seems to be that if the game had ZERO lag as stated by another poster and as agreed by you in the quote, it makes no sense asking how much of an improvement it will add to the game. Because by definition there is no improvement possible.

I have been hearing that it is VISTA that is causing problems with games, especially those that are "older". Performance hits were common for games running in Vista, not to mention having the game just crashed to desktop completely. This occurs mostly with this games (which unfortunately I play a lot):

    - Battlefield 2
    - Battlefield 2142
    - Half Life 2 / Counter Strike
    - Company of Heroes

Anyone who own the G1S can confirm about the Vista-Gaming issues, irrespective of the games?

In CS:S, I'm getting a very comfortable 80-110 fps. Oddly enough, the first time I fired the game up, the framerate was only half that. However, after enabled the "High Performance" Mode and correctly configuring my network rates, as well as throw in a few engine tweaks, I'm playing just as well as the Alienware desktop rigs at my local LAN.

Actually, my only complaint isn't related to performance - just have to get used to this new keyboard; it's very different from my old Logitech Elite.

How do you configure the rates....what would i put in the console for an adsl connection of 4 Mbps

Also I hope those engine tweaks doesnt include running the game in DX 8 mode lol coz that would blow

I am certain those who have their G1s' are now happily gaming away, having far more entertaining things to do than post on forums about notebooks!

I am waiting for mine to arrive, and although I bet when it DOES arrive I will be far too interested in playing the games than testing them just to post results here, I certainly intend to pay nbr back for all the help I have garnered here recently by posting my experiences. I won't promise to report gameplay and framerates for more than the settings I find comfortable enough in the few games I have just bought (Doom 3, Far Cry, CNC3, F.E.A.R). However, if someone has a particular group or two of settings to suggest for these games they would really like to see results for (in the interests of having some potentially useful settings with which to compare gameplay from the G1s to that on other gaming rigs), I would see about trying those settings out.

    hi there!

i just got my g1s today. after installing a few necessary programs i downloaded 3DMark2006 and gave it a shot. i did not know you have to pay for this program, so i just ran the basic test you can do for free.

the resolution was set to 1280x720, i was not able to change it. I got 4426 points here. I have to say that there are lots of probably not necessary bloatware programs running in the back. like i said, its an absolutely virgin g1s :)

is there a legal way to get a better version of 3dmark for free?

I guess i should download the updated drivers and get rid of the bloatware (for getting besser scores)

    About wow and frame rates-
Its how smooth it COULD be. THe max FPS I got on my g1 is about 122fps. But average can be anywhere from 15-40fps. Since WoW doesn't have a benchmark, I can only go by what the max score is. And the higher that score is, the better average score should be.

I was actually asking for the reliability for playing these games in realtime. I know that the G1S is more than capable in playing those games, but I have seen in other gaming forums that these games kept on crashing when people actually playing on it. So the issue is more on Vista.

    Just checking ... :)

I ran F.E.A.R last night for a while with most settings on Maximum at native res, with some AF and AA, however I didn't try your suggestion since my new lappy is still offline (now where did I put those ISP account passwords?). It was greatly playable, although I suspect when I come to measure the fps it might not cut the mustard with many here. Which just goes to show that what is considered only OK framerates are still terrific for games if you're not a fiend for the framerates.

I hope to test for you properly tonight - first with the pre-set test the game has, then by playing the game for a bit with FRAPS on.

And as for other games - Doom 3 ran at high everything and some AA, AF on flawlessly for the 45 mins I played it. My only criticism - it's not as spooky as F.E.A.R. :) Command and Conquer 3 - again, native res and maximum settings for all but AA and AF, where I had 4x AF IIRC and some amount of AA. Again, two missions with not a complaint to be made!

And I finally got to play Civ IV without having to enable the 'show map' cheat to get around my old card's no-Shader-2.0 issue. Wow it looked gorgeous - reminded me of the transition from VGA graphics of Civ I on the old 286 my Dad owned to the SVGA on my friend's 386! Waves lapping, birds flying away from the forests as your troops enter, pigs snuffling around...

More precise (but still not TOO detailed) reports to follow after work...

I played FEAR at native res with default settings (medium or so) and while it got a little choppy at times it was definitely playable. I'm sure a good overclock would help too.

Would anyone know if the G1S can play Company of Heroes and Sup Commander? At least at medium settings with hundreds of units on screen at once?

What about Oblivion? I'm thinking it should. How well will it perform outside the initial dungeon though?

Also, does anyone know where the Vista games compatibility article on Wikipedia went off to? They had a list of games with issues with Vista. But it's suspiciously gone now. At least for the past 24 hours. Did Bill and his cohorts have something to do with it?

Been playing Oblivion on medium settings at 1680X1050 for a few hours and it's very nice. Does get choppy so you might want to lower something to get better framerates for those frame whores, but really it looks great.

Sorry - I've been bogged down with work deadlines and I've been getting nowhere, hence the lack of any better testing.

However, I did notice a few days ago that around the middle of the GDI campaign for CNC3 there is a mission with ENORMOUS numbers of units/weapon effects etc on screen, and that definitely slowed things down. Not unplayably, IMO, but there was definitely a few seconds longer wait than usual between, say, victory and the appearance of the victory screen, and a pre-set scroll across the map to show the mission objectives etc was noticeably slower than usual as well. With that in mind I think max everything at native res for CNC3 is just on the edge of playability for the most intense a mission can get with the G1S' 8600M GT.

    OK, I just did some testing with the internal F.E.A.R. benchmarking movie. Here is what I found;

The options that are the biggest drain on the graphics card are AA and soft shadows. All else being equal with pretty high settings for everything else, here are some numbers to back that up:

With volumetric lighting on at medium, native resolution and all other settings on and at maximum except for DX8 shaders (off), and AF (4x).

AA off, soft shadows off AA 2x, soft shadows off AA off, soft shadows on
    Min FPS 22 15 13
    Avg FPS 41 30 24
    Max FPS 73 52 42
    <25FPS 1% 29% 61%
    25-40FPS 64% 57% 38%
    >40FPS 35% 14% 1%
The movie is very smooth with neither of soft shadows or AA on, but as soon as one of them goes on you get a huge hit, mostly in amount of time that there is less than 25fps. Note that the other two settings that I had been lead to believe were impactful on performance, volumetric lighting and water resolution, were turned on to medium and maximum respectively, and as you can see the FPS is pretty good.

Good news for those who want ALL the eye candy on though - I ran everything at max settings (including max AA, AF AND soft shadows) at a resolution of 1024x768 and got

    Min FPS 23
    Avg FPS 43
    Max FPS 160
    Below 25FPS 3%
    25-40FPS 57%
    Above 40FPS 40%

Which looked great as well. Hope this helps someone!

Apologies for my woeful html table skillz. :)

My desktop runs 2 6600gt cards and I have WOW maxxed out with AA and AF off, its runs very smooth at a 30-50 fps clip, and it scored 2547 on 3dmark06. I cant see the G1S having any problems with WOW.
