For what reason you wanted to use Santa Rosa ? Don't think these laptops would come cheap within the 2 months of release. And the thing you are thinking of doing (upgrading to Santa Rosa) requires you to change the CPU (it has a different socket) / The motherboard (Which will probably mean you have to get a new GPU module if the Santa Rosa A8Js is refreshed with a DX10 GPU) and I think the wireless module.Meaning that you can only keep the shell and the LCD the HDD and (perhaps) the ram.(Selling your current laptop and buying a new one will be much more logical)
And lastly, don't think this lightly of A8Js.A8Js is the most powerful 14" gaming laptop that one can get his hand on :)

I agree with mujtaba, your system is quite a performer and will be for some time.
What i've learned is no matter when you make your purchase you always seem to find something you wish you would have waited for. Whether is be price drops or new technology or a missed deal. After owning a few notebooks I realized this and just enjoy the machine that I bought and am happy with it :)

Yeah, there's no reason to get buyers remorse. Honestly, you will drive yourself crazy if you start worrying about how your laptop is no longer "the latest technology".

If you were to get a Santa Rosa-based A8Js, you could then start getting buyers remorse because you don't have one of the new Penryn chips due out at the end of this year (which should be faster, cooler and more battery efficient). Or if you waited til the end of the year and bought a Santa Rosa-based A8Js with a Penryn chip, you could start getting buyer's remorse because the next major platform would be just around the corner in 2008, Montevina.

As long as your laptop does what you need it to, that is really what matters.

stat chasers always make me laff. Just be happy you got a nice lappy and just go and play.

You could have waited for SantaRosa but then you might as well wait for Montevina(late 07 or beginning of 08) or wait for Nehalem(for 08/09)

There are 2 groups of people here. Those who always seem to need the state-or-the-art then cry and complain about driver issues, compability issues, slow performance issues, etc etc..
Then there are those who have just bought pre-vista and sit back and play effortlessly and watch the grippers gripe. The smart ones will know another buying cycle wont be for over a yr from now until Vista Sp1 or even Sp2 comes and all the vid cards catch up to dx10 and any issues santa rosa may bring.
    Which one are you?

I work in a camera store and I aways get asked if there is something better coming out, I tell them yes, but you will miss this weekend/holiday/event that is happening now. You were happy when you walked out with your new laptop and the laptop has not changed. Be happy and don't stress about always having better because you will never have by waiting. The grass is always greener on the other side.

One counterpoint - my Z33Ae was the last in a long line of very successful M5/Z33 models, the most developed of the Pentium M series.

The new Z35 is larger, heaver, and isn't styled quite as nicely - no flush touchpad, etc.

Sometimes it's better to buy the last of a more developed product rather then the first of a new thing.

The one thing I regret about a pre Santa Rosa purchase is the DX10 compatibility/games --which have tenative release dates of "3rd Q 2007 (aka Crysis)". There is absolutely no other type of app that your current NB purchase today wouldn't be able to handle well.

Bottom line is that Centrino Pro, while a step up performance wise, won't make a huge difference in 99% of what you do with a notebook.

And let's be honest...... even with a mobile DX10 card, I would really wonder how smoothly they'd run a game like Crysis anyway.

Now that we are talking about buyers remorse, my only remorse on my purchase is that I bought my laptop with Vista. But with what drastic changes my life will be having in the following months, it's not gonna matter, and I guess every new peice of technology has a few bumps in the road when it first comes out.

I have buyer remorse from my A8jp as well, but not because of Santa Rosa, more because of it's crappy screen. Oh well... thats what Ebay and Buy/Sale forums are for...

You can play Crysis in DX9, it just won't have all of the features.

agreed, also (i might be duplicating the point, not sure), but how well are 1st gen Dx10 cards going to run Dx10 games?

As far as i can tell, a Santa Rosa powered Asus G1s:-
    intel 965 chippery
    667/800Mhz FSB CPU
Geforce 8600GTM 256Mb* (on an MXM card?)
    801.11n (on a mini PCI/PCIexpress card?)
    everything else, the same.

    *Rumor and conjecture

So compaired to my intel 945PM based G1, i loose out on 133Mhz of FSB action, and the rest of the parts i can maybe retro fit anyway.
plus when the 800Mhz FBS mobile parts come out, i should be able to pick up a T7600 667Mhz FSB CPU for cheapy cheap cheap. :)
so i'm not really that bothered, as my G1 spanks World of Warcraft as it is :D

but this is the nature of the beast, there will always be something bigger/better/badder or smaller/faster/cuter out after your... whatever electrical gismo you buy. ;)

Is there any basis to the idea that the GPU in a current Asus G1 can be replaced with a GeForce Go 8600?

There's also the opposite problem, which I may have - delayer's remorse. I have narrowed the laptop models I want down to two, and when Santa Rosa appears very soon the models I want will possibly be retired and refreshed with Santa Rosa specs. This sounds like a good thing, but not if it puts these laptops several hundred CHF or more higher in price, and there's no guarantee that the refreshed/replaced models of what I want will be as good - the only good upgrade that would be for sure is that they have Santa Rosa cores, with the limited set of bonuses that brings. Maybe they will put a less powerful GPU in there, or maybe their hardware will lead to worse Vista issues for the next 6 months than the pre-Santa Rosa hardware currently has.

Unfortunately, whilst deciding on the laptop I wanted the decision of when to buy was taken out of my hands. Now my first chance will be the end of May, and I intend to make that purchase as quick as I can so that I don't miss out on the current crop of Asus G1s or Dell Inspiron 9400s, and instead get stuck with more expensive machines from the new crop.

If you get buyer remorse everytime, then how long do you stay with your current items before it gets "outdated"?

Not necessarily. Santa Rosa is a replacement for the current platform (Napa).

For the most part, laptop manufacturers keep their prices generally the same even when a new platform is introduced.

Otherwise, laptops would get progressively more expensive every time a new platform came out, and that wouldn't make sense.

Some Santa Rosa laptops might cost somewhat more relatively, at least initially, due to higher costs of certain components, but that is it.

At release, the prices are skyhigh due to the demand(early adopters) and the slow production. But in due time, it'll settle to the current prices as the previous technology slowly phases out.
