i have a asus w7sg laptop. i did install XP on it, and it worked. installation guide here http://http://forum.notebookreview.com/archive/index.php/t-260996.html
now, i used my webcam a few times, and i had no problems. and all of a sudden the cam stopped working.
when installing the driver an error msg pops up.
skreo56 wrote about the fact that XP does not recognize one of the USB ports (check link above, 08-27-2008, 07:48 AM).
well, it was different, since it worked before XP did recognize it. even when it was not working anymore.
i uninstalled the driver and after another install the USB port was unknown. probably because of the error msg while installing.
i tried what skreo56 wrote but i am not sure what "suppress" means. i can disable it or enable it, but how do i suppress it? it is the same to me, so i tried disabling. but it still didnt work. same problem.
    how do i fix it?

it was a small square that said "error" in the top and the msg said "USB2.0 UVC1.3M WebCam".
but its funny. i turned on my laptop in the morning and now the USB port is detected and i can see the USB camera in the windows explorer. that is how te problem started.
but everytime i want to use it, it says. "creation of video preview failed. please check the device connection and make sure that the device is not being used by another application or user."

ok, i just read here http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=138977 that i should rename it to the actual name that is supposed to be there, since my camera is called "USB Video device#2". now, it might sound stupid, but what is the camera supposed to be called?

the w7s on asus.com has both xp and vista drivers. It may list multiple drivers however. To figure out which one you have go to devman and find the hardware id for your camera. compare it to the one listed on their download page.

But is it really a driver problem? i used this driver CMOS_Camera_Chicony_XP_Vista32_64_070912.zip and it was working. then one day it just didnt work anymore.

    devman is device manager.
the ameras can be different in the w7s that is why you may see more then one camera driver if you scroll down the list.
have you tried doing a recovery? that may be a faster answer to your issue

in devman it just said unknown device or video composite device. so that didnt really help me.
ok, i thought about recovery, but since so many have the same problem, i thought i could fix it without.

but its weird. i actually solved the problem, and i dont know how. i tried to install d max driver. but didnt work, got another error msg. then i uninstalled it, and reinstalled the original one i had from the beginning (CMOS_Camera_Chicony_XP_Vista32_64_070912.zip). i did that actually a few times before, but didnt work.
anyway, i got my error msg again but this time it did work. so i dont really know where the problem was and why it didnt work before.

anyway thanks for the help, guys and for everybody having the same trouble, sorry that i cant give a better solution than this ;)

    found the reason.
i am watching movies through my computer on the TV. to do so i have to change the resolution to 800x600 coz the screen wont fit on the TV.
anyway, after changing the resolution and setting it back to normal the camera wont work. so actually a little restart does the thing.
hope i could be of a little help for someone.

    cheers
