    need help,

have a 2.5 year old asus w3v. has been working fine except battery life down to about 30min. but i mainly use it plugged in anyway.

turned it on over the weekend, the computer boots into windows and then reports battery low despite it being plugged into ac. notebook does not register nor runs off ac. battery expires and notebook turns itself off.

i have tried removing battery but it refuses to run off ac.

strange thing is that after removing battery and putting it back on, it runs for another minute or so (on battery power) before running out of juice.

    any suggestions:

    1. ac adapter broke (i tried another ac adapter – same voltage, but slightly less am and did not work)
    2. battery needs replacing (i would have thought it would still run off ac though)
    3. motherboard problem
    4. ????bios battery

    thanks

I'd start with #4 - CMOS battery replacement

It looks more like a power supply malfunction. If the adapter seems to be working fine, and you tried a different adapter, then I think the power supply circuitry inside the notebook is faulty.

On some computers (like the V6J) this circuitry is separate from the motherboard and you can get it for a few dollars from the ASUS eStore. For many other computers, though, it's integrated on the MB which is bad news... you'd need to exchange the entire MB.

Depending on the damage it may also be possible to solder things back.

There is a W3 disssembly manual on the Info Booth maybe that helps you.

I would suggest if possible also try a different ASUS adapter (same characteristics).
