on my computer u can overclock the cpu wiyh a program that it came with. now on the cpuz it will read 1680.17 to 2340.18 every couple seconds. the same when its not over clocked 1500 to 2150. i know in batt mode it conserves power but it does it plugged in on high performance. whats the deal. is my x5 broken? i just brought my other one back and got this today its the same model but it was always a steady 2150 [2340 overclocked] i got a 1080 0n passmark 06 is it a good score for a 900 dollar laptop??

If its in balanced mode it will step up and down in speed as activity rises and falls. There maybe other power management options on an asus but all laptops with vista and intel speedstep or the amd equivalent do this in balanced.

I don't really see why everybody gets caught in getting good numbers in synthetic benchmark programs, the most important thing to me is actual gameplay.
Why did you return your old one?
Your laptop seems pretty capable of running most games and getting good FPS, that's the most important thing.
And about the CPU downclocking itself, it is probably in balanced mode! :p
    Check the power settings.

Ick, sorry to hear about the HDD problems. Other power management options may be enabled, make sure to check out the Direct Console program and your Control Panel, as Vista could have its own settings juggling between your power configuration. I'd just double-check and make sure the two are in sync.
