    Hi folks,

Just need your opinion here. I want to buy a laptop either the g1 or a8js. I wanted the a8js because its smaller and most likely easier to move around. Its just that i'm not impressed with the battery life and some build quality issues. I hear the g1 is built better and personally i think its worth the money because you get a bigger hd, nicer screen, and better webcam but i'm not sure if i'm making a mistake on choosing the G1 over the a8js just because i will be moving around place to place and it may be too big to lug around. I am a student as well.

I'm learning a bit about those 2 as well.... i've put together a side by side page of them that might help a little to compare them spec to spec

You pretty much hit the spot. the A8 is a great budget breaker notebook. It has a few flimsy parts and some flex, the lid is quite plasticy and prone to scratches, but in the end, its $1400. Comparing to the market, its cheaper then most in its category, not to mention how much it blows the competition away in terms of raw power.

Thanks for the spec to spec comparison. The other laptop i think that may be comparable to the a8js is the Compal HGL-30. You can configure it to have the same specs as the a8js. You get the 9-cell battery with the Compal which is great....but personally I believe its one ugly looking machine. what do u guys think?

I'm in the market for a laptop myself. After looking around ALOT, I've settled on the G1. For the value that Asus gives for the money, I just can't pass on it.

I have an A8Js and I couldn't be happier with it.

I use it lightly for school, work, and other personal applications. While the battery life isn't great, it will last me 2:30 to 3 hours if I have the brightness lower. This is sufficient for me in this area.

The gaming on this thing is what I love the most. Battery life is negligible here cuz for any game to run decent the adapter has to be plugged in. It runs CSS, Quake 4, BF2, and almost everything else at middle to high range fps with settings on high. I was most impressed with how it handles CS:Source considering its a 14" lappy. (I have put another GB of ram in it)

Plus I lan with friends a lot and taking my laptop over in its shoulder bag beats the crap outta lugging my desktop around. As a gamer I don't think you could go wrong with either, but the A8 is cheaper and that's what sealed the deal for me.

By adding one more gig of ram didn't that cost you just as much as the G1 if not more?

Youll be very happy with either one.

I do like the small size my computer has

Even if i had the g1 i wouldnt use the huge backpack to move it around id get the smallest thing that would fit.

The A8 series, as corilos said are not built very well. I would have gone with an A8js or something but the build quality just did not impress me... The W3j impressed me though. If your are going to be lugging the notebook around, neither notebook is ideal. The G1 is quite heavy... The W3j though is still a nice option and I have seen them go for under $1500...

I spent 1500 in the A8 then 90 more for the RAM. At the time I bought it it came out to be a bit lower than the G1. The express card slot was also a plus for me. Looks also played a small part in my decision.

I can't remember exactly how much the G1 was at the time.

The reason why I haven't considered getting a W3j because the A8js and G1 all come with t7200 processors. I'm assuming they out perform the W3j which comes with a t2500 processor.
