i want to upgrade my notebook ASUS F3JA-AP036H from 2GB to 4GB RAM to use the SO win7 64bit

according to these specifications i can put up to 2 modules of 1 GB
    Main Memory DDR2 533/667MHz SDRAM, 2x SO-DIMM socket expandable to 2GB
    http://support.asus.com/Specificatio...KZYle16vQnN6Gi

while on intel website i see that Mobile Intel® 945PM Express Chipset supports Max Memory 4 GB
    Mobile Intel® 945PM Express Chipset

On the menu of the bios 207 there isn't the feature REMAPPING, do you know if there is on the non official 208 version?

is there someone that have my same problem?

where can i find a hack bios to fix my problem?

    thanks

    Welcome to the forum!

Funny how I keep traipsing back here every couple of months, and occasionally manage to still find things I can contribute about :). Most of the time, older Asus notebooks are upgradeable to 4GB RAM.

I've written about this around here before (as others have) that the published specs don't list recent RAM config options for older systems like the F3j because 2GB RAM modules either weren't available when the system was released, or were prohibitively expensive, such that Asus' engineers didn't QA the motherboards with that higher RAM config. And Asus has never gone back to update release specs based on industry changes at a future time. Specifically for you, back when the F3 came out with its DDR2 667 RAM, 2GB sticks didn't really exist.

Asus has a long established track record of this kind of thing with RAM upgrades - the vast majority of older systems that came out pre-2GB stick day are spec'd only to 2GB, but run just fine with 4GB ... worst case, you just need to install the latest BIOS for the model ... but you may be fine to just use the RAM, without any BIOS updates (and definitely no hacks) needed.

    thank you for your answer

others f3ja owners said that bios found only 3GB of ram instead of 4GB, because there isn't the remapping feauture

can you help me to add this function in the f3ja bios?

    thansk

The other GB is probably co-opted by the onboard video automagically. Likely it's all detected and all used.

It's been a while but I do remember PM945 chipset can actually support up to 3GB of RAM only instead of 4GB.

C90S also use PM945 chipset and at the time people can only install 2G+1G stick, if 2GB+2GB is installed the system won't even post, so Asus came out with new BIOS that it'll at least post when 2G+2G is installed but still only recognize 3GB.

Like I said it's been 4 years, but I do remember people were talking about the Intel specsheet about it can support up to 4GB is incorrect and only desktokp version of 945 can recoginize all 4GB of RAM.

It was well established and tested that dual channel in notebooks provides only a *very* modest performance boost - unlike on desktop motherboards where the difference is much more appreciable.

    Otherwise, your analysis is correct.

but the 1GB or 2GB added makes my notebook better? can i see great performance?

    thanks
