Besides the looks, fingerprint scanner, and TPM, is there any reason not to go for a Z96j (with a Merom) over an equivalently configured V1j? (Once it comes out, of course...)
I mean, **** the V1's hot but from all I've heard the build on the z96 ain't so bad either, and nondescript looks can be an advantage on campus (not to mention my wallet remaining several hundred bucks heavier...)

I think there is TPM in both machines. Only reason to buy the V1J is the ability to swap the optical drive for a 2nd inernal HD/ 2nd battery or travelers drawer.

Also the new feature of the docking station in which many would like, because replugging all the accessories can be tedious for many. So instead just put your laptop into the docking station and have you accessories already plugged into the dock.

    The V1J has:
    Finger Print Reader
    Modular Bay
    Optional Docking Station
    1.3mpx Webcam
    Spillproof Keyboard
    Good Looks and Quality

Compared to the Z96j, which costs less, but it's best to wait for both to be available and then compare what's best for you.

Many here love the Z96J and that's great, they also like the looks and know they can add VBI panels or do some customization work to it.

    TPM = ?

Here are some more words since the system won't let me send a post with only 4 letters.

if you're asking if build quality is worth several hundred or not..that really depends on the size of your wallet and personal opinion..i think in the long run there will be huge differences

Chris27 - where'd you get that price for it? and did you assemble it yourself?
still, most people here are projecting the V1j to cost around $2000-$2100, iirc. Not a thousand-dollar price difference, but several hundred, yes.
Just how much is the build quality difference, anyway?

Milestone - thanks for the comprehensive list. Of all that, I don't really need the modular bay, docking station, and fingerprint scanner ... the webcam I thought was equivalent on both models? ... and so all that's left (for me..) is the spill-proof keyboard and the looks/build. I guess I just need to see the final retail price for the v1j to decide if that's worth it to me.

And Yair: TPM = Trusted Platform Module .. it's drm-stuff.

I got the barebones w/ the dvd drive and wireless card at mwave. the ram and HDD at newegg. and the merom I bought from somone at xtremesystems. When the parts arrive I will be putting it together myself. Its actually not too hard to build one yourself especially since many people here guided me through my first z96j build.

as for the price difference, I doubt the v1j will come as loaded as my brother's laptop so I took that into account

hmm.. did some more looking around - how would the z96j (not the v1..) compare to things like the Compal HEL80, or the HP nc8430? talking in terms of build, size, heat, ergonomics etc. since spec-wise they can be configured about the same...
