I got my new V6Va today (thanks, PROPortable!). Of course the one time I had to leave the apartment for like 15 minutes is when FedEx came, so I had to drive down to the stupid store. Oh well.

    This thing is amazing!

    Just some thoughts:

    1) The right palm rest does get a little warm - I was surprised by how quickly this happened too. Just a minor gripe, it's not uncomfortable or anything.

    2) I like how they partitioned the 100GB HDD. There's a hidden 1.86GB FAT32 (Recovery), C: is 54.84GB FAT32, and D: is 36.46GB FAT32. Pretty nice. I wouldn't have gone with the FAT32, but w/e.

    3) My final comment...the screen...oh my god, the screen! That thing is amazing. I'm on my desktop right now b/c I have Visual Studio .NET installing on the V6Va, and every time I glance over and gack, my CRT just looks blurry! Amazing, simply amazing.

    Wohoo!

There is a hotlink on the desktop to convert the drive to NTSF...... this is safe and if you prefer it, I'd suggest doing it...... The reason the drive is set up that way is becasue you can't go from NTFS to Fat32, but you can go the other way around... and it's a one time thing.... It's just as safe and secure as if you formatted it that way from the get go, but this way they can send it out and those who know what they're doing can switch to NTFS if they want.....

.... hearing the screen out does your CRT is exactly what I like to hear.... you'll be ditching that soon.... trust me!

    Grats guys,

I am enjoying mine so far. Put a 7200rpm HD into it and you got yourself a killer machine. Also, update the video driver with omega driver ( www.omegadrivers.net) and update the intel wireless driver from Intel if you're having wifi problem.

Did you use a hitachi or a seagate? If you used the hitachi - you probably already had it - but it's going to get hot... if at some point that bothers you, just know that when I fixed myself up with the va, it was the first notebook I personally used the seagate 7200's in and it ran like a stock 5400 hitachi.... which is a lot cooler and a lot better battery life...

I am using Hitachi 60g 7200rpm from my old laptop. It does get hot but it doesn't bother me yet. I will probably wait until the 100g Seagate is more reasonably priced then I will upgrade, unless you can give me a killer deal on the drive.

.... we bought a ton of them when they first came out a few months back - but the cost on them is still VERY high...... when something is new it's the start of the line that jacks the price up (seagate) - not us.... give it a year and it'll be cheaper...

I've found the only use for BestBuy is the deals they give on HDD from time to time. Just check their sales paper each week, eventually they'll have a good deal on notebook HDDs. That's when I'm planning on making my move.

i guess that Seagate's price is very expensive. Do you know which performance is better??

I think performance wise Seagate and Hitachi are similar, but the Seagates run a lot cooler.

Actually Tom's Hardware proved the Seagates performed better as well... quite amazing.

How do Western Digitals compare to Seagates and Hitachis? I've always used them for my desktops and have never had any problems.

The difference between desktops and laptops are far more than just smaller components........ for a laptop, I wouldn't use anything other than a pentium-m at this point......... in a desktop - I wouldn't use anything other than than amd chip.... likewise, on a laptop I LOVE seagates and all of their benchmarking numbers prove how good they are in every way.... but on a desktop - give me a WD Raptor.....

Seagate has basically the best of the following.... some others come close, but certainly no one has the whole package...

    1. warranty - 5 years
    2. battery life
    3. perfermance
    4. noise
    5. heat
