    Two things here

    1) If I put it in standby, touching any button/key will wake it up

    2) I put it in standby last night.. I woke up this morning and it was on and the battery was almost dead

#1 is normal, #2 is a mystery without further details

You can't, that's the way all of the ASUS laptops I've ever touched have behaved. Other brands have different behavior, like requiring the power button to be pressed... sorry

Standby does consume some power...have you been able to do standby for the whole night before without issues?

Yeah but it has an 8 hour battery so it's not a big deal... but I THOUGHT it was going to go into hibernate after 45 minutes like I put in power options. THis was my first night or so with it so I don't really know...

Regarding #2, if it doesn't happen all the time, then it's likely some program that's waking it up. Did you set it so that windows update can wake up your computer from sleep? (actually sometimes its like this by default). Also, you may want to check scheduled windows defragmentations (a common reason).

Ok I did a test and put it on standby and it came back on around an hour later... any clues?

Do you have an external mouse plugged in? Also check for software that runs in the background that may be waking it up.

external mouse was not plugged in.. I can't think of anything that would be running in the background that would wake it up, at least anything that came with it. I don't have any antivirus..

The only other obvious thing I can think of is wake on LAN, but that should be turned off by default.

Yeah I don't think that's even an option but I'm not sure

I think it might have something to do with the power settings while on battery ie standby after 20 minutes, hibernation after 30 minutes.. anyone have experience with that?

I'm not sure if this is going to help, but these are my current settings for my 1000HE.

    Power Scheme: Portable/Laptop
Turn off monitor: 15min plugged/5min battery
Turn off hard disks: 30min plugged/5min battery
    System standby: 20min plugged/5min battery

When I manually put it in standby, the only way to wake it is by pressing any keys on the keyboard. Other than that, it stays in sleep mode even when i'm connected to the internet.

yeah i'm pretty sure it's because I have hibernation on and set to go off at a certain time.. but it wakes up at the standby time.

like say i put my computer on standby, and the settings are

system standby : after 5 minutes
    system hibernate: after 10 minutes

it will wake up after 5 minutes.. but if hibernate is set to never it wont, at all
