Just curious. Also what do you like about this machine? Are you excited about getting it? How does it compare to your current machine? Feel free to add anything else you may want to.

The processor is plenty powerful enough and 4GB of RAM is overkill.

I read somewhere that the RAM is going to be 667MHZ and that later this year you can upgrade to 800MHZ is this correct? Will it make much difference?`

    my current specs are

    Dimension 8250
    pentium 4 2.4ghz
    512mb RAM
    RADEON 9500 PRO/ 9700
    1280x 960 resolution

yea, it's sad but when i got it it was top of the line, i can still play games like WoW and Source, even Half life and some fear. But now you can see why im excited, i mean it's only like a 500% improvement!

asus g1s does not come with 64 bit os installed.

so getting 4gb ram is possibly pointless.

i'm getting it probly but i've also been wondering about the 8600M GT w/ 256 instead of 512...i don't get why they aren't doing 512...can anyone explain possible reasoning besides cost?

It will be a GeForce 8600M GT 256MB, TurboCache 512MB, which is a pretty disppointing upgrade from a 7700 512MB (onboard VRAM).

Pretty disappointing? It's going to be as good (if not better) than the 7900 GS, which is a top of the line card. Plus it's going in a 15.4" notebook!!!

What I was referring to as being disappointing was the lack of 512MB discrete memory on the video card. Certainly, the GPU upgrade is nice.

Well it all depends on if we gonna see some real benchmarks soon, I've heard that the 8600m GT is more or less comparable with the 7900GS. The 3dmark scores at notebookcheck however show us something else. At notebookcheck the scores are more or less the same as an Ati x1800, but nowhere near a 7900GS.

Yes the G1s is faster. It is hard to say by how much but the 8600M GT might get up to 4000 3dMarks 06. Have to wait for a detailed review and better drivers to say for sure.

you still can`t compare the g1s to any current laptops because this is one of the that comes with santa rosa (that I now), the other one is the sony Fz 190
i would prefer tha asus because the video card of the sony is 8400m gt and the asus is 8600m gt (asus wins) and the price are very similar I think the asus is like 50$ cheaper Ithink.

oh yeah I forgot, don't recommend the 4gb cause the up grade is to expansive and what i've heard is that the notebook can only use 3gb so you'll be losing 1gb of ram
I recommend you buy a 2gb ram at newegg or somewhere else and change it with one of 1gb, it's cheaprs

The 7700 is better than the 8600 at higher resolutions/settings...

Sorry to disappoint but the 8600 got negative reviews from everywhere and sure it equaled the 7900gs/x1950pro at low resolutions/low settings but once quality was increased the lack of a wide memory bus/dedicated memory took a drastic hit. (kind of like the x2900 out performing the 8800gts at low levels but then getting owned with high AA settings.)

Strange, I've never seen them. Or do you mean for desktop? Well at the Zepto website they claimed to achieve a score of 4100 points on 3dmark06 (on 1024x768).

I don't think the 7700 is better than the 8600m GT actually. I think the 7700 is more or less the same than the 8600m GS.

The 8600GTS scored over 6000 3dmark06 points but couldn't keep up with the 4200 3dmark06 point 7900gs in games. Just shows we need 3dmark07.

But still the 8600 is better than the 7700. Unless its a on game like F.E.A.R on WSXGA+ with high settings. Not too mention dx10 looks a lot better than dx9.

Why 3dmark2007? The only benefit would be showing the 8600 as slower in benchmarks than the 7700. If it can't keep up in real world games, it can't keep up.

I plan to buy one as soon as I see the G1S running games like Crysis and Alan Wake at decent speeds and high settings, then and only then I'll jump to it...

Of course I'll have to sell my current (just purchased) G1 first... :)

I'm looking forward to this. I was all bent on buying the G1P but then recently discovered this one was coming out. The 8600GT mobile version doesn't quite compare with the desktop version, so I would rule those benchmarks and comparisons out a bit. I'm glad this has the new 965 board over the 945. This should allow the C2D processors to shine a bit better.

    Found another vendor offering pre-sales @ $1929:

    http://1toppc.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=G1S-A1&Store_Code=GPS

Looking for vendors outside of California though since tax would ring in at around $150+.

Depends on the dealer of course, ASUS doesn't offer any of the pre-made notebooks in different specs. You may void your ASUS warranty in customizing it.

I definitely plan on buying one, but I just don't know from whom. Where do you guys plan on buying yours? (Also, I find the 8600M GT and the Go7700 to be fairly similar, but I would give the edge to the 8600 purely because of DX10 compatibility. From what I have read 10 will be in many ways superior to 9c.)

Usually you pay sales tax if you buy from a vendor within your state. Considering that the two vendors named already (MilestonePC and GenTech) are both in California, it'd be very unlikely that you'd have to pay tax. Maybe a slight hike in shipping, but nothing along the lines of $150+ in tax.

I'm not too concerned with shipping time. A week is fine. There are a few vendors in the midwest I'd probably be looking into, as long as they don't decide to hike the price up $150 from what Milestone or GenTech plans to charge.

I am very excited, I think I am going to pre-order it unless someone gives me a serious re-consideration about it.

I am gonna upgrade it to 3gigs of ram too I think like I had read previously.
Anyone detest someone buying this laptop? Any reasons, concerns? Help me out, you guys probably know a lot more about this than me.

Asus has a customer service division called "Notebook presales" basically you call and get info while they pitch to you.
