Both are Asus gaming laptops, both have WUXGA 17in Displays, both come with an array of flashy lights and both come with the same peripherals.

The G71 has a T9400, which although is part of a newer generation, is slower than the G70's T9500 by 0.7MHz

Both the G71 and G70 have been configured with an Intel X-25 80GB SSD as the main HDD (blazing fast SSD btw) and a 320GB 7200rpm (fastest notebook non-SSD drive) as secondary. They both have a huge amount of RAM, though the G71 has 3 RAM slots (3 x 2GB) and the G70 2 RAM slots (2 x 4GB). The 9800M GS in the G71 is around 10% slower than the G70's 9800M GTS.

The two are of almost identical measurements, with the G70 being 0.1in thicker depth-wise.

One is silver and grey, one is red and black. I prefer the brushed silver look of the G70 as it is more subtle than the "oh look I'm a gamer laptop come steal me" black and red of the G71.

I would occasionally use the laptop unplugged but 99% of the time it would remain on my desk and plugged in. Money is really no issue but saving a couple hundred would be decent.

Which laptop is right for me?

    To round it up:

    G70SG-A2:

    PROS:

    • Faster CPU speed
    • More Subtle Design
    • Slightly more powerful in most aspects
    • 8GB of RAM

    CONS

    • Thicker (just)
    • Worse Battery Life
    • Santa Rosa
    • $600 more expensive (but not a big deal)

    G71G-A2:

    PROS

    • Latest Generation
    • Cheaper
    • Better Warranty
    • Better Battery Life
    • Stylish Design..........
    • 3 RAM slots

    CONS

    • .........but can be over the top sometimes
    • Worse GPU
    • Less RAM

Please don't suggest any other laptops and don't "Fill the FAQ to get better responses" me. I just want an opinion on these two laptops only.

    Thanks,

    plasma.

The price for one... which will play pretty much everything. Save some money for your next computer. Even the n50 would be good enough to run any game

If you're still on the fence and haven't bought it, I would look up benchmarks for the cards and try to find out how hot they run.

Still, it's a pretty obvious choice to go with the cheaper one with the info given.

I'd go with the G70 if you can afford the difference. It's got a better GPU (most important for gaming), seems like it's RAID enabled (PM965 Express Chipset +ICH8M), multimedia touchpad, and has a few more hotkeys on the left side of the keyboard.

G71. Use the price difference to get all the accessories you need, plus a netbook for on-the-go work and email. That way you don't risk your gaming laptop. ;)

G71. For the price, it's a pretty good deal.

I have the G71G-A2 and as an example of what you can do with it, I play Left 4 Dead at 1900x1200 with all settings maxed out and only have an occasional blip of lag but it is rare.

    I configured them with Gentechpc.

If the G70 does have RAID, that would be a selling point for me.
Ill get another Intel SSD in the future and RAID the two, which (proven by benchmarks) offers the fastest performance out of any Drive, notebook or not.

The G71 is cheaper but looks terrible, imo. I actually have a budget of up to $4500 but a netbook would also be nice.

The G70 has a better GPU and CPU so if it's not about the price it looks better.(I am not crazy about the red color on the G71 buy that's just my own opinion).

    Oh crap.

I just realized that xoticpc prices were all in USD. And that one AUD equals 0.688 USD. I'm was still thinking of when AUD and USD were practically 1:1. The G70 AND G71 are probably both out of my budget now.

    sigh. Stupid Recession.
