(or did)...when you get your new Asus?

I'm anxiously awaiting the W3j - after a month or more of patient (and some impatient) anticipation, we're at the final countdown.

First thing I'm going to do (besides the initial configuration stuff) is copy all of my baby's digital pictures from this work laptop over to my new machine. Then I'm going to FINALLY be able to burn a DVD (multiple) for archiving purposes.

Then I'm going to play Civ. 4 or Age of Empires III for the first time.

After that...I'll get working on my review!

What are you guys going to do?!

I had the W2j picked out and all ready to order, but then i suddenly changed my mind to something else (sig) it was cheaper, so it made me go that direction....too bad i cant have both , if i would have went with the Asus, i more than likely would have loved it

    :) ^ I'm not that fancy SRD .

I copy the pics to an online storage but I also want hard copies to salt away. It's shocking that DVDs can go bad after a few years (even if they're in an optimal environment?).

i just got sick of losing data. lost HDs and dvds that go bad. noone really knows the shelf life of DVDs bought ones last a while those a different than burned. in optimal enviroment i wouldnt bet longer than 5 years. depends on the dyes they use and the glues. online storage is good but they compress the jpgs. i think good CDRs will last double the time dvds do though. i still have burned cds from high school 10 years ago so they have to be more durable and i have burned dvds dozens of them from 2 years ago that are bad .

I'm very gad this came up! One of the first things I wanted to do was to set up something along the lines of RealVNC so that I could access the files on my desktop regardless of where I am. SRD, can you, or anyone else, provide some information for me regarding how to set this up or if there is a better method than RealVNC? I'm sorry if this post is inappropriate for the thread, but your comment triggered my mind

Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated!

And, one of the first things I'll do is to enjoy a kick*** game or two on my new lappy :)

Once I get my W3J, I am going to install PCMark and the 3dmarks and see what I get :) After that I will fiddle around with the wireless connection, a bluetooth mouse and making sure all the power settings are setup for max battery life unless I am plugged in. And lastly, I heard yonah chips CAN do dual channel memory and since W3J comes with 1 1gb of ram, I will see how hard/easy it is to get access to the ram area and order myself another gig of ram :) That is my plan... now that could all change it if comes with a dead pixel... then I will be swearing and such :)

    ^ Good call - I'll do that.

I think there's a process for working in the battery as well - I definitely want to make sure I'm getting full charges.

I'm going to try and do a review so I'll take care of the benchmarks then.

    CAN'T WAIT!

Heh. Just remember guys, if anything goes wrong, wait a day or two, and don't start Bashing ASUS, your reseller, your dog, or whoever. Keep it mature and calm, because it won't help. Be calm, post the problem, and ask for a solution, or ask your reseller. If your keyboard pins break off, or your LCD has some small scratch...well....uhhhh....

Coriolis raises a good point. Along with postive reviews, I'm sure we'll get some with defective machines, and others that come on here to scream about how the W3j didn't live up to the hype. Hopefully everyone will be mature and we won't have any 5 page threads about scratches on a screen.

First thing im gonna do, is write a mini but informative Review, so that I know the ins and outs of how it works and what kinds performance and batterylife im gonna get.

Then format the Hard Drive, and install my own Win XP SP2, and add all essential drivers, then all appropriate benchmark programs, then write a FULL review with pics and games.

And then im done...take it to school and yah.. you know the rest.

I expect this will take me over 15+ hours to do.

    Thanks,

First thing I'm going to do when I get my w3j is marvel at it. Then when I work up the confidence, I might pet it a little. Then I am going to install Oblivion and watch my chin hit the desk. When that is done I will start moving files over etc... Install 3d Mark 05 and test that. Then I have a little review/something extra planned. Considering it will be the last 3 weeks of the semester I might not get this other little project done, but if I do, I hope it will be funny.

Install benchmarking software and get some numbers to post to the forum, maybe write a review if I get it faster than enough people that there aren't already 20 reviews up here. After that, probably put it through its paces with a few games (even though I don't game much, I'd like to see how it stands up to my Dad's PC that I built for him last year).
With all the ogling done, I haven't decided whether I'll wipe it and start with a clean OS install or just remove the software I don't want/can't use. Norton is going for sure, if I can get it to. And I think I read something about Microsoft Works? Don't quote that, but all this nonsense and bloatware (not that there's much) will have to go. So starting fresh sounds like maybe a good idea.
When this is all done and all my software is installed, I will write my final term paper, which is due in the first week of May. So hopefully I get it in enough time.

    First thing - reformat.

    Second thing - install WoW

    Third thing - install 3dmarks

Fourth thing - write a review

Fifth thing - transfer all my documents that need to be portable! e.g. website files, movies, songs, software

This is more of something I'd like to do before I even have the W3J in my hands, but. . .

Any suggestions for a good lappy bag? I'd like something that will offer good protection (i can be a klutz) and also give me enough room for a textbook or two. I was thinking of something along the lines of a crumpler or messenger bag, but don't even know where to start looking. I've scoped out Best Buy, Circuit City, and the Apple store (hey, why the hell not) and nothing has really won me over. I know there are a number of online resellers/retailers that will offer bags, but I'm hesitant to buy it without seeing it. Any suggestions are welcome!

    Thanks in advance,

    Adam

A-Lit: After looking at alot of the possibilities for comfortably carrying a laptop and textbooks toghether (possibly over long distances), I have decided that the way to go is notebook sleeve + backpack. I mean, messenger bags are really neat, but I think especially in college, it screams "I have something valuable inside, steal me, steal me!" While this would not always be the case, a backpack is rather unsuspecting in this regard, and I choose the comfort of a well fitted backpack. Pick up a nice day pack (Maybe North Face or Osprey), and spend the extra cash you saved on a notebook sleeve and some extra RAM.

I'll be reformatting mostly because I want a dual-boot system with Linux, and I don't want to do it by editing partitions. Plus, it's just cleaner that way, and I can set it up exactly how I like it. But I'm sure for most people the factory defaults should be fine.

What's Asus' policy on the default factory setup? Is the HDD one big partition? Or does it come with a small partition with the OS and a big one for data, swap, and programs? How do people like to set their own machines up for cleanliness/performance?

^ I'm going to run w/ the factory load - especially since it shouldn't have a lot of bloatware.

Just my luck to try and do a reformat and break something.

My major concern is getting the best drivers in there from day one, and then being paranoid that no junk gets loaded on there.

Though I am a Slackware fan, I am going to start with Ubuntu due to its great hardware compatability.

*If* it works with everything I need, then I will dual-boot, else, single boot of XP!

I'm not extensively familiar with Knoppix. Is that one of the less user-friendly distros that require you to be a guru in order to make everything work nicely? I've used Debian and Ubuntu without trouble for the past couple years, but I can't claim invincibility in the linux arena. I'll most likely install Ubuntu on mine, just because I know what I'm doing and set up is relatively easy.
Seb: were you dual booting or standalone linux?

Knoppix is a live-cd version of Debian. You *can* install it to your harddrive if you feel like it.

SEB: Sound and Intel Wireless worked fine? I know the nVidia will work fine, but I am worried about the 3945 a/b/g. I know there are drivers for them now, but I would rather it be like the 2915 and 2200 Intel chipsets and just *work*

I'm going to condition the battery - Charge it up to full capacity, drain it down to nothing, then charge it up again. The newer Li-ion should be drained to 40% then charged up again
