Anyone know the backstory to this model? The U50 line is not listed on the ASUS USA site but is listed on the global site, where its styling is touted above anything else. The specs for the price look appealing but I'm hesitant to buy if this is some one-off best buy model and I should be going for a standard ASUS line instead. What similarly spec'ed ASUS would you buy instead?

    thanks in advance.

    Hey there.

I recommend you try to play around with one if you have a Best Buy near you. I was at one the other day and my biggest gripe was the touchpad. I just couldn't get a handle on it. It seemed sluggish and inaccurate despite playing with the mouse settings.

Try to find one. Sorry I couldn't help more.

Thanks. I have test driven one at BB and the touchpad seemed fine but I usually use a wireless mouse anyway.

My concern is that this is some crappy design for BB only that will be lower in quality than the mainline ASUS lines. Otherwise it has great specs.

Generally what best buy has done, as many users can atest to this here at NBR, they downgrade the machine specs, get rid of the ASUS warranty and force the customer to buy there 1 year warranty. They claim to do it this way to offer the "best price" they can to customers. If your going to buy a laptop, personally, best buy is probably the worst place to buy from because of these. Oh and geek squad isnt all that great from what ive been told by some buddies.

On the other hand the build on bestbuy laptops is going to be the same as for the "mainstream" models (for better or for worse). So, from this point of view, the BestBuy model won't be "lower in quality".

I'm posting this since I usually interpret "quality" as "build quality", the specs are for me "performance".

Fair enough, Build quality will be the same, but they lower the manufactured spec's like Native Rez and stuff like that to "cheapen" the buy

Except for this model which has an Intel i3 processor but is basically the same price as the K50's at newegg with the AMD processors. Display res seems to the standard ASUS spec's. I'm aware of the warranty downgrade but the processor for the price is what caught my eye. If I could find a similarly spec'd ASUS for around the same price at another shop, I'd be all over it.
