    after hibernate or stand-by, the welcome screen used to show up...
    now, a box that asks for user name and password shows up

    is there any way i can change this back?

    You have to go into your user account options (where it says "Change how users sign on and off") and turn "Fast User Switching" on.

    i went to services in computer management
    i set fast user switching to automatic
    after restart, it would not let me put a check next to fast user switching in user accounts
    i would check it, apply it, reopen it, and it would be unchecked...
    any suggestions?

    Hmm... Did you do something recently that caused this sudden change? That's about all I got on this topic. Maybe someone else can offer a suggestion.

    Here's a set of instructions to get this result: If you want your laptop to boot without havign a login screen, and come out of hibernate without a logon screen, do the following.

    Start -> Run -> type "control userpasswords2"
    Click on the user you want, then uncheck "User must enter pass.........", then hit apply, then you will be prompted to enter a password, just hit ok (no password). Then hit ok. Now the first part is complete.

    Part 2 is, Go to the Control Panel, double click on User Accounts icon.
    Click on "Change how users go on or off", make sure you leave a checkmark in the welcome screen option, but no checkmark in fast user switching.

    Then restart your computer, and if it loads without using a login screen, thats good, then put your laptop into hibernate, wait 15 seconds, then take it out of hibernate, and if it doesn't prompt you at all, then your good to go.

    or try this:

    1: Click Start>Run and type in control userpasswords2

    2: Uncheck "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer and click "OK".
