I'm looking to get a W3J before December and I've been searching this site for a while. I've read tons of good and bad things about this laptop that answered most of my questions, but I wanted to ask a couple questions I've seen different answers to.

I know there is a fix for the grainy screen, and for the sleep mode, but are these fixes just for the early runs or also for the new memroms?

Does it come with a restore cd, full install cd, or is everything just on a hidden partition?

Is there anything you absolutely hate about it?

Best to hop by the W3j user 'thread' to get more info and inquire with those guys!

The grainy screen was fixed with a BIOs update, no reason why it should still exist. They all come with restore CDs(disc 1+2), a drivers disc, Nero, and other discs for ASUS branded audio/video program.

By now, all of the W3Js (at least since they had Yonah in them) can be fixed with the BIOS update in the sticky at the top of the forum.

I pretty much like everything about my W3j...and it has a merom in it...here are the highlights:

    W3J
    T7400 core 2 duo 2.16 ghz
    2 gigs ram
    7200 rpm HD
    Newest bios (no grainyness)
ATI X1600 graphics 256 mb running ATI catalyst 6.8 drivers (dont try the 6.9's they have issues with the power scheme)

    3Dmark 05 - 4408
    3Dmark 06 - 2212

    1. This laptop is very quiet...totally silent doing windows work...and not much louder during games. Optical drive is quiet too and I cant even hear the HD in a silent room (maybe a little).

    2. Good size to power ratio. 14.1 so easy to carry around but also powerful for the latest games.

    3. Solid chassis and phenominal build quality. Best I have seen in any laptop to date.

    4. Gets warm during games but not hot...very good cooling system and I dont use a cooler.

    Things I dont like?

None really...I guess I wish it never crashed or I didnt have ANY problems with drivers and the power settings...but these things are bound to happen with any computer. Also while the screen is phenominal I guess it could use a boost in the viewing angle department. Thats it...I would recommend one to anyone.

Best place for upgrading your W3J is your dealer. Some dealers that customize are:

    www.btotech.com
    www.milestonepc.com

As a small note, BTOtech has a great set of warranty options, with thorough explanations of them. They even let you upgrade some parts yourself, with permission, and let you keep your warranty! I bought from them, and Eddie (the proprietor) is absolutely top notch! I'll be buying my next laptop from him.

I plowed through most of the W3j group thread ...

did anyone make that 'when you first get your w3j what to fix' list? I didn't see one in the 15 pages after it was mentioned.

    got mine from Geared2play.com.

The only thing I can think of to "fix" would be to update to the 6.8 (NOT 6.9) catalyst drivers, and be sure you have the latest bios. Mine came with the latest bios as I think its a requirement for Merom support anyway.

So the only thing I had to change was the video drivers.

    Awesome machine...works great for me.

Hi Charivari what's the version of the BIOS you got in your W3J when it came?
