My local area network icon remains in the status of unplug even if a working ethernet cable is plugged in.. Can't get on the internet, can't get on network... I thought it was software conflict and decidied to format yet that didn't do the trick, did anyone else had the same experience before? My guess would be that its hw failure... But the weird part is that windows detects and says the device is wokring properly...

Make sure the network card is ENABLE. Should be default.
And check if the cable works. That happens to my friend's laptop, in the end it was the darn cable that was bad.

I'll second that... seen it happen more times than I would like.. It's one of the most pain in the behind problems. No one EVER thinks it could be the cable!

It's most likly windows, everyone seems to be blaming the model of laptops on what happens to them.

By 'can't get on the network', do you mean you're not getting an IP address, or you can't browse the network/internet?

As in the situation where no cable is plugged in meaning no ip address, can't browse the network/interent etc.
I thought it would be windows at first as well, so I formatted and nope that wasn't it...
It wouldn't be too bad if i had wireless at home, but i don't :(

Does running cmd then ipconfig show 0.0.0.0 or Media Disconnected?

If 0.0.0.0 then rt click my computer / Manage / Services and set "DHCP client service" to automatic and start the service.

If Media Disconnected, then try uninstalling the NIC driver and allowing WinXP to reinstall it.

If that doesnt work, then maybe a hardware problem?
