Hi guys, would need some help.

Somehow, since I bought my W3J in May, I was never able to get the infrared port to work. Tried with 3 mobile phones, but no reaction from the laptop side :)

Not that I need it so much, but having spent about 2000 euros on te laptop, would like to have all parts at least responding.

What am I doing wrong? Is there any kind of fix for it, or maybe someone has also experienced this kind of problem?

    Pleased to hear your suggestions.

Even though I'm surprised you found a new one that doesn't have bluetooth, IR functions just fine on the notebook... all you need to do is basically turn it on. It's a reciever, all the "work" is done by the devices connecting to it.

Thanks, but actually I have Bluetooth, and wireless, and so on. Question was, I want IR to work also, and due to some reasons unknown to me, it refuses to work. Needless to say that everything is "on" and device manager says that "device is working properly'.

Shot in the dark... Did you enable the IR port on the phone(s)? Sometimes they come disabled by default...

Yeah.... sometimes it's the easiest things we forget... but it has to be enabled on the phone and the computer.

On a side note though.... you have bluetooth and you even remotely care about Ir? Bluetooth is secure and works a good 30' away.. and is rather fast..... Ir isn't secure, works up to about 3' if you're lucky.. and is slow as an old lady crossing the street. Are you trying to using Ir simply to use Ir, or do you honestly have a good reason for busting your hump when you have a better solution that is even easier to use?

... or are you simply saying you have bluetooth and wireless on your computer? That I know.. but does your phone have bluetooth, or only Ir?

My friend, I am not stupid. I care about Ir because I cannot make this bloody port work! It bugs me! Anything else works just fine.

I tried it with my phone Panasonic GD87 (turning Ir on), on similar Sharp phone, on Nokia 6210 (all these phones do not have BT, Ir only).

Maybe I'm not getting something, maybe I do not know how to =enable= Ir on the laptop - ain't it enabled by default? There are no buttons which I can press for Ir on the laptop to activate it!

I remember on my old Dell Inspiron 8000, once you activate Ir transmission on the phone and align the Ir-windows, laptop informs you that "blahblahblah is in range". Is there any way to check, maybe I have faulty chip on the MoBo?

I didn't call you stupid and don't infer it..... I'm simply trying to help and basically, all I can tell you is that they Ir turns on and off and that's basically it..... if you can't get it to work from there --- well then you can call yourself whatever you want, ok? ;) ... I was just trying say, if you're wasting your time with that, bluetooth is better in every way and in my opinion, easier to hook up (if that's even possible).

Now I get it... it bothers you... ok, well that's better than you have some report due tomorrow and you need to get information off the phone - know where I'm coming from?

Ir is off by defult ... I believe... But basically, go into the control panel and click on "wireless link" - that's runs your Ir.

    No offence was meant, sorry.
I know there is "wireless link" in control panel. I checked already whatever I could, but how to enable it (if it is off by default)?
Repeat, not that I need Ir, but it simply bothers me that something does not work.

    Hello,

You cannot just point a phones IR to a laptop IR and expect it to work.. You need to select/enable the IR option in the phones desktop software. This tells the software to *expect* incoming phone codes through the IR port. Then the phone software will be probably sitting in the background as a service and wait to receive the IR codes from the phone. These will then be translated to the *action* you need to perform.

Palm desktop software has an option to select the serial port. I guess you need to double check on the phones desktop software front and enable the IR port as a receiver.

    Hope this helps..

Uhmm, sounds as a good idea. Problem is, need to find software for my Panasonic GD87 which is almost 4 years old...
Anyway, shall try it out, if it works this way, I am relieved. :D

Something strikes my mind though that actually no software is needed for the phone to be recognized by the laptop... As far as I remember, Panasonic Data Connection Assistant is needed only for setting up the modem on the phone via the cable or GPRS.

What is it that you want to be able to do once this IR connection is established?
