This system seems perfect for me, size, graphics, build, screen resolution, etc.

BUT, it seems like every time I come back to the Asus forum, there is some new issue with the W3J or some still unresolved issue (like the hard drive causing clicking in headphones, debate about what video driver doesn't make the system worthless, etc.)

What's the consensus on this laptop, for you users three months in or more, whats your issues with it, any laptop wear, other problems? Do your headphones click (big one for me), is there any hope of a decent updated video driver or being able to use VISTA on this? Speak up guys, before I tear my hair out!

With regards to the video card drivers, and in order to stop the W3J from restarts, you will have to use Catalyst 6.8 or some people have 6.12 working for them aswell.

Then you would also need the latest bios in order to fix the graininess problem.

Yes you can use the W3J for Vista, it is powerfull enough to handle it.

Keep in mind that most people who post on this forum are only going to post about the problems they are having. No one is going to post about their laptop not having any issues...

    =D

No problems with my w3j yet.

Okay thanks for your input, you've helped alleviate my fears.

Anyway, after waiting years for a good Merom laptop to come out, I figure might as well wait those last few months for the W3J santa rosa update (assuming it's coming). That's when everything will perfect, no complaints on the Asus forum at all then I'm sure ;)

I agree, I think it has been around 6 months or so that I have had mine now, and I still love it. I have update the bios, which fixed the graininess issue that I couldn't really even notice until it got better. The only other issue I have had is some standby issues that was resolved after removing "Power4Gear" (which I just had no real use for, so no problem for me) I don't use headphones on it, so can't comment on that, but if I have a chance I will try using they a little and post again if I notice anything on mine. I have tried a couple of the recommended video drivers and just haven't noticed any huge gains or benefits that others get out of it, so I have went back to the drivers that comes with it and have no problems at all.

I think this is such a popular notebook with such an amazing support group here on the forums, its easy to hop online and ask about every little quirky thing that happens when using it. If I had it to do over again, I would buy again in a heart beat!

Ok, that's it....... this thread cements the majority of worthless worries a few people have started. We actually have a thread entitled "W3j driving me crazy"....... It's a notebook that you're not having a single problem with.... you're going crazy because you're reading the forum and hearing about someone else's assumed problems?

OK, this hypochondria of notebook problems needs to stop before more people with absolutely nothing to worry about get sick.

Well, rest assured, I'm not literally going crazy, its an expression which is in this case is intented to be humurous, but maybe more sterile language is best suited for the serious Asus forum.

A better word might be frustrated, because I do not want to invest in a product that may have problems like clicking headphones or endless restart cycles. Paying over 2 grand for a machine which may have those issues would be something for me to worry about. I tend to spend two large with a bit of caution and consideration, but that's just me.

Anyway, people with largely problem free W3J's posted, as I hoped, and now I feel much less like going....frustrated..... ;)

Here's the thing... Asus' typical user buyes and leaves the forum. As I've said many times, it's the people that don't show up that are 100x greater than those that do - at least on the "no problems" side. On the flip side, everyone with a problem, or even the hint of one posts on this forum. You already bought the machine and good or bad, there's no point in losing sleep over it. If Dell only had 0.1% of issues with their systems, the number would of course be much greater, but they'd be computer gods...... Nothing is without problems, and that is reality. 90%+ of people with problems with any Asus notebook simply have driver or software incompatibility issues which are more than likely their own fault. Don't lose sleep over a notebook that most of it's owners have felt was the best computer they've ever owned. It's ridiculous... really, just chill ;)
