I tried burning an audio CD yesterday using iTunes, WMP, and the drag and drop function. They all took an awfully long time at the "Finalizing Disc" section and the CD came up empty in the end on all three attempts. Tried again with a different CD/R and same thing. Is this surely a hardware problem?

No, I wouldn't say it's surely a hardware problem. Try e.g., burning a disk with Nero, if it comes out right it's probably something with the Windows-integrated disk burner.

You can also try burning disks from a Live linux distro (preferably on a USB key so that you can remove the CD :) )

    And a Windows reinstall.

If after all these steps it's still not working, then you can safely conclude that it's hardware.
