So I just powered up my W2V for the first time and got the following message:

"Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key."

    WTF?

Any suggestions as to what is going on here? Before I start mucking about with these rather cryptic instructions ...

    Thanks,

    Gerry

Maybe it's from that very first shipment from Taiwan without the OS? (and the reseller didn't return it to Asus to install OS?)

No - That's got the OS loaded - Ger said the hard drive wasn't getting identified which leads me to believe either the cable is loose or something happened to the hard drive. Neither of which are that big of a deal for Ger because he's within walking distance to Asus if need be and if they have to get him a new hard drive they'lll be on top of it on Monday........ I would still check that cable connection though.

Mystery Solved. The hard drive was not connected and there were no screws holding it in place. I inspected the pins to make sure they were OK, and installed the drive. Went into BIOS and confirmed the drive was recognized, and after re-booting the W2 went through the normal steps of configuring Windows XP. So far everything seems to be OK.

I also just wanted to say how helpful Justin was. It was 9:00 PM on a Friday night here in San Francisco when I posted my question on this forum, and sent an email to Justin and to ASUS tech support. 30 minutes later Justin answered on his Pocket PC, while out for the night with friends at 12:30 AM his time. We conversed back and forth throughout the next hour, and he zeroed me in on finally checking the physical connection of the hard drive.

So that is some great service! Thanks Justin!

You're welcome - like I figured, they pulled all these drives in Fremont to load the OS and I doubted the drive itself was bad... so a little thought keeps you from having to wait till monday and maybe sending it in to Asus.... and you learn more about your computer.... everybody wins, but it's still something that Asus is going to get put on notice for.
