How is the heat? Is it uncomfortable to use in your lap when typing on word or surfing?

    How loud is the fan?

    How is the screen?

And how is the trackpad? The one on the V6Va is sub-par, is it the same one on the V1S?

    Overall, do you like it?

Anyone know where I can find a lot of photos of the V1S, or even a video?

    Thanks!

Zam: You are like me I am also looking for more Info on this particular model but very little info available just because it’s fairly new. I have read every thread on V1S A1/B1 and still not satisfied.

The VIJ is cosmetically similar, and I found a video of it here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=106584

But other than that, I don't think I know enough about the V1S to be sure about it. My main issues with the V6Va, which I own, is that it gets too hot, and the trackpad is poor. I hope the V1S is better in that regard, although I love the V6Va despite those problems.

Zam: I have done extensive research with very little information in a short period of time. First Asus is not a popular brand as compared to H.P, Sony and Dell so not too many owners. Second Asus V1S A1/B1 is fairly new so there are not too many owners out there. matt_h1, Zydan and matti have reviewed V1S A1 and according all three the build quality of V1 is good. Main Battery life is about average. I have compared V1S and Sony FZ both have about same battery life. As far as the battery ware goes there is no real battery ware on V1S. Now the biggest problem everyone is facing is about the modular battery, it's not working as it is suppose to and this is where I am stuck.

jamus28: I have read your post about the modular battery. You have also criticized V1S horribly. After reading your post I thought of doing more research before ordering my V1S. My question to you is why you feal that the built quality is inferior. Your comment contradicts to what matt_h1, Zydan and matti all the reviewers say about the built quality of V1S.

My dad owns a 1501, and if this one is better than the V1S, the V1S is the biggest piece of crap I've ever seen.

Honguy, I am watching what you post because it is very similar to my thoughts about this. I have gone back and forth between the Asus A8, the G1s, the V1s, the C90s, the Inspiron 1520, the Vostro 1500, an HP, Sony, etc. Everything seems less than perfect.

But lately I am reviewing what I really need in a laptop. Some of things that I think would be nice are not essential. I will have it set up in my living room in front of the HDTV. So I was thinking that I might want it to be a good gaming machine. But it might make more sense to not see this laptop as that game machine and at some later point just put together a not too expensive and equally powerful desktop or media center computer for occasional gaming and other entertainment things at some later point.

So I don't need HDMI. The only reason I wanted it was because if I do hook the notebook up to a TV it would nice to just use one cable rather than audio cables and a DVI or VGA.

Also I don't need blazing speed for anything. Even the computer I am typing this on now, a P4 2.2G is plenty fast (running XP) (but a bloated and much slower than fresh install XP).

I do need decent graphics because I do CAD design - not little things like Sketchup models but somewhat complex mechanical assemblies. The CAD software needs at least 256M of video RAM, but not blazing high frame rates.

So I figure I could back off with the speed a bit as long as it's fast enough to not bog down with Vista. So Honguy, I can relate.

I would just like to say that I love my V1S.

I'm so glad it's the laptop I ended up getting.
HDMI has been very useful for watching AVI files on the HDTV with out having to burn DVD's.
The laptop has a beautiful, sophisticated look and still has the power to rock games like Bio-Shock.

The left click has worn in where it's not bothersome now.

I don't even notice the slight grainyness against white backgrounds anymore. And on dark backgrounds the screen is beau-ti-full.

DVD burner works great, headset jack has no interferance like the Dell Inspirion that I sent back.

Does give off quite a bit of heat on the right side where the fan is, but only if you have your hand directly there.
    Which why would you?

Also I'd like to recommend www.xpad4laptops.com
It's a great item, very light, doesn't need to be plugged in, very thin - perfect for having laptop sitting on my lap all day without a problem.

After doing fresh install, and tweaking it out, it blazes through all programs as well as boot-up.

    Anyways, once again. . . I love my V1S!!

Considering that I live in California I could save a bit of sales tax if I purchased out of state (I'm paying way too much taxes to the state right now), so that rules out some the dealers I've heard good things about. Can anybody recommend an Asus dealer outside of California?

Well I bought my v1s from powernotebooks.com which is located in Genoa, Nevada and they are considered one of the best resellers out there. Here is a compiled list. Scroll down a little bit and see then broken down by state:

btw thanks to everyone who had anything to do with compiling that list. It is helpful! :)

I have been posting recently that I am reconsidering whether I really need the 8600M GT GPU. I mostly need graphics power that makes it more powerful than integrated intel GMA to be able to do CAD apps. Dreamer mentions that a Quadro FX570M is equivalent to the 8600M GT. Quadro's are generally recommended for CAD - I think not because of the hardware but because the drivers are written to be rock solid with CAD apps. Although I've never had a problem with gamer cards running CAD, maybe I should be looking at those models that use Quadros.

Depends on what you're doing... and these drivers enable some hardware accelerated features that you won't get on gaming cards... but then again depends on what you're doing... not everyone needs a Quadro.

Any comments on Quadro FX570M with 256mb vs 8600M GT with 512mb?
Like Walter S, my main purpose is to use for MCAD, specifically Autodesk Inventor.
My problem is that I must have a webcam, and cannot find any notebooks with above Quadro and a built-in webcam. So for me it is either TP61P + a separate webcam, or V1S-B1. TP1P is ISV certified for Inventor. Will the V1S-B1 run Inventor?

Sorry, TP1P and TP61P in my previous post should have read Lenovo T61P.
Also the Lenovo has a T7500 processor vs a T7700 in the V1S-B1.
Would the combo of T7700, 8600M GT 512mb DDR2 video in the Asus perform as well as a combo with T7500, Quadro FX570M 256mb DDR3 video in a T61P or Compaq 8510w when running Inventor?

I assume inventor is some sort of AutoCad program. The Quadro 570m is designed for this kind of application, It is the equivilant in raw power to the 8600GT with GDDR3 but with optimized drivers for AutoCad, Even with a better CPU the 570m will outperform the 8600GT DDR2, Though with 512mb of Vram is may handle very large renders better.

the 570m ddr3 completely kills the 8600m in the v1s. the 163.44 drivers got 800 points more in 3dmark on my buddy's t61p. The whole "it's optimized for CAD" is a partial lie. The 570m is the same hardware as a 8600m, if you download the same drivers, the ddr3 versions of both should run everything exactly the same.

I got my new V1S-B1 from Newegg 10 days ago and I agree with ZYDAN; superb laptop with really good build quality. Much better than my Dell. However, my left click was/is awful, virtually useless compared to the right click. I'll give it another week to see if it wears in otherwise I'll RM it. Seems to be a recurring problem. Apart from that the best laptop I've ever owned (my 7th laptop and first Asus) once you wipe the hard drive and optimize it.
