I've had my V1jp since January, and in the past few weeks I have had the laptop turn off twice, and I can only guess it was due to overheating. When trying to restart it, the power light would come on for a second, then turn right back off. The first time I was able to get it running within the minute, but the second time I had to let it sit for a while before it would come back on.

Also, I recently noticed the fan kicking in pretty heavily every 5 minutes or so.

I am on my laptop a lot and its usually sitting on a wood or glass table. Now I have it elevated by slipping a couple books to allow the center vent underneath to breath.

Anyone else experience this? I have recently reinstalled Vista, but I don't think thats the problem.

Have you tried cleaning out the vents? Dust accumulates very fast in vents, it could clog the fans and make it very ineffective.

It does, indeed, sound like overheating. Glass should be OK, wood as well as long as it's smooth.

Maybe it is overheating due to dust buildup, although that is unlikely since January, unless you are in a dusty environment. If so, then you need to clean the fan either by opening the notebook or using compressed air -- there are guides on the Guides or Hardware forum, I don't remember which.

Otherwise, there are sometimes bugs in the Vista ACPI drivers that force the CPU to always run at full speed. Still, it shouldn't turn off from overheating, the fan should be able to cool it properly even under those conditions.

You should monitor your CPU temperature to get a clearer idea of the problem. Use NHC or something from the ASUS installation (they have something called NBProbe they should've released it for Vista). Take care though, NHC also has bugs in Vista that might keep the CPU locked at max multiplier. So NBProbe or something that only monitors without interfering is a better idea.

Hey it now works perfectly... thanks for the tip.

I opened it up and used compressed air. It was some heavy duty dustage. I've been traveling since January and stayed at a very dusty place for 3 months. I don't know why I didn't see the connection.

    It's now eerily silent.

Would have any long term damage since the fan had to be cranking for the past couple weeks?

Potentially, yes, it'd slowly kill the fan due to the grinding with the dust and moving parts, however its usually fine. A good spray of compressed air every few weeks is ideal, you can even open up the back cover and blow air there to make sure its clean.

    Hello,

Do you spray in the ventilation exit or the entrance?

Both would be ideal, though opening up the back is easier to do.
