I am getting a new laptop for college, and I am really set on the V1JP. I m going to order it in the next couple of weeks. I have a few questions first though. Should I just get the laptop that comes with Vista Business? I was thinking about buying the XP version and upgrading to Ultimate but I do not really think I will need it. My main concern is DVD playback because Business does not have the Media Center feature. Should I just download a program to pay DVD's instead?

What would you recommend? And If I do get Vista Ultimate, is it really that hard to install? I have installed XP a couple times but the talk about all the drivers is making me a little weary.

    Thanks

You don't need Media Center to play back DVDs. You can play back with Asus' DVD program. Windows Media Player can even play back DVDs. There are many ways to play a DVDs including free programs.

Chosing Vista is up to you, I personally will stick with XP Pro because I have all the right drivers, it is stable, performance is optimized, as well as the drivers.

However in Vista you may face some problems, I do suggest going Business or Ultimate, which will allow you the ability to turn off the UAC.

As for DVD and other Media playback, you can download programs to play Video and Music content.

    VLC - movies, dvds
    Media Player Classic - movies
Winamp or Windows Media Player, movies and music

All of these you can donwload by searching on google.

Is ASUS still allowing free upgrade orders for Vista? If so, then I'd stick with XP pro, until they work all of the kinks out of the newest OS.

If I'm not mistaken, the media center version is for remote-control or some bs. Nothing special, and as stated, DVD playback is all a matter of which software you like.

Unfortunately the upgrade offer expired 15th March, 2007. Only notebooks that were "purchased between October 26th, 2006 and March 15th, 2007 is eligible for the Express Windows Vista Upgrade Program."

I will probably just get it already loaded with Business then. Seems like it will do everything I need. I am going to wait and keep my options open for a little longer.
