Hi, just saw a V1J and a W3J here in Singapore. The price difference
is around US$500. :( I really like the V1J with its integrated webcam
and 15.4" Screen. The W3J is not bad also. Is it wise to go with V1J
considering its almost US$500 more with the same Video Card. Please see
    specs below.

    V1J
    T7200 Core 2 Duo (2.0)
    1GB DDR2
    120GB HDD
    15.4" WXGA CS
    1.3MP Webcam
    DVD Writer
    ATI X1600 512MB HM
    XP Pro
Free: Bay Battery + Case + Optical Mouse + Docking Station
    Price: SG$3298 = US$2120

    W3J
    Core 2 Duo 1.83
    1GB DDR2
    100GB HDD
    14.1" WXGA
    DVD Writer
    ATI X1600 512MB HM
    XP Pro
Free: 80GB HDD Bay + Case + Bluetooth Mouse
    Price: SG$2498 = US$1600

Tbh unless you specifically need a docking station, bigger screen or webcam, I would go for the W3J since it's ultimately the same specs, but quite a bit cheaper.

Incidently is that W3J available from an online retailer at that price?

Firstly i would suggest you double check the prices, the specs and the freebies for your country, Singapore?

Secondly your cmoparing a 14" vs a 15.4", you have to consider what do you want in terms of portability, something more portable or less. Bigger screen or not?

Also if the V1J has the X1700, yes.. the V1J with Core 2 Duo should have the X1700, but then again every country is different, that also sweetens the deal.

Overall, the value in freebies for the V1J is, 500$ USD, plus the V1J has better specs, whereas the W3J has a value of roughly 175$ USD in freebies.

Do you have the need for the mini dvi port or not? Also the V1J has a fingerprint reader, spill proof keyboard.

This is so true, don't try to justify your self into spending more i you don't have to, if you need a portable performing machine, the W3j + freebies is a great deal in itself.

If you needa 15.4" business style, somewhat desktop replacement laptop, go with the V1J since it also has great value.

Both will perform well, both serve somewhat different purposes, so pick the one that fits you most.

I ditto was Danny said..... can't compare a 14 and a 15.4" system...... period.... You can trust to justify it, but it's actually impossible and ridiculous to try to do so.

Those freebies seem awfully odd..... and I also don't believe that exchange rate either. The bottom line is, if you think it's a good deal, get it..... especially if you're FROM Singapore....

I was stuck in a similar position comparing a8js and w3j, but in the end you have to pick what you will actually use. ^.^

Kamzu makes a good point...... plus one that same note, the system is an extension of you and if you want a higher quality design, with better materials, and a better build - the W3 beats the pants off the A8..... On the other side, in terms of crunching numbers, on paper the A8 will beat the W3 and is cheaper....

I saw those laptops here in Singapore at the Funan Center. That's a whole building where all the electronics, laptops and gadgets are sold. There are a lot of Asus authorized dealers also. The V1J and A8Jp is sold exclusively at South Asia Computer Pte Ltd Shop. The W3J is sold exclusively at Microware Systems Pte Ltd Shop. Asus Singapore chooses what the shops can exclusively offer that no other shops can sell. There is no competition, thats why each shop can pad the prices on each laptop. :( Please see the specs and prices below. You would also notice that the A8JP is more expensive than the W3J. I also think the price of V1J seems cheaper because of a lower Video Card (ATI X1600). The exchange rate right now is 1$USD = 1.55$SGD.
