I have almost the exact problem another owner posted about.

Day old unit. Attempted to install latest Intel HD 4000 driver instead of using Asus version.. Screen went black and even after waiting 5 mins did not return. Forced shutdown attempted install again, same thing. This time no video on boot... No logo... not able to see bios.... Windows does boot. Hdmi out worked.. Removed all video drivers reinstalled Asus versions problem remained. Lcd backlight works as does fkey to turn off. Reset bios defaults via output to Hdmi... Now even Hdmi out doesn't work (no signal.)

The fact that this happened while installing video drivers and the fact that another owner experienced the same thing seems too coincidental. It seems more likely than to me that some settings are getting written to hardware (bios????) causing unusable video.

I love this ultrabook but I have never seen a device become unusable at a hardware level as a result of a driver issue. If it is the case that scares me.

Anyone have an opinion? Anyone want to risk the same outcome and try installing the Intel generic driver? Exchanging laptop tomorrow almost temperature tempted to try same again?

ya exactly happened to me. i sent mine in for RMA repair already last week

before sending it back for RMA, i disassembled the laptop to replace the SSD back to the original HDD and ram. noticed a smoking/toasted smell near the LCD connecter on the motherboard. initially i thought it got fried because i was using a 3rd party charger

but glad to know that it's an issue with others as well, which means its a driver problem not my 3rd party chargers. really surprised that a software driver will literally fry the hardware itself......

Hi folks, here is another unlucky soul! While updating the Intel drivers (downloaded from the Asus UX32VD site, version V9.17.10.2828), the notebook screen went black. Today morning, I tried to hook the UX32 to an external monitor and it works! So it's just the laptop LCD what's "broken".

I also tried to restore Windows to the point before updating drivers, but to no avail. So I guess the only other option is to send the notebook back to seller/Asus service? My notebook is just a week old so I hope to get a replacement soon. It's really silly, because I just configured it according to my needs and I hoped to start to use it from this week. Now I'm left with useless piece of aluminum. What a shame!

thats not good, i would have thought that the driver from asus website would be safe. but guess not....

the driver version i installed that caused the issue is V9.17.10.2867

now the intel website has a new 2875 version

i wonder if it solves the problem.....

Same here, while update the Intel 4000 driver screen went black. I took out my ssd and ram and got it RMA'd. I just got it today and from their checklist it seems they replaced the lcd panel ( on a plus side no more back-light bleeding), the motherboard, and for some reason the touch-pad. So far everything seems good, here hoping it lasts longer.

same here, except they forgot to connect the power to the backlit keyboard, had to send it in for a second time, should be getting it back in a couple of day

before sending it back for the second RMA for the backlit keyboard issue, i tested the driver again by doing the following first:

    - update bios
    - update atk driver
    - install hd4000 driver from intel website

screen went black again, but i just kept pressing enter and had it reboot by itself, and the screen came back up and its fine....phew

Did it revert back to the OLD driver or did it successfully install the new Intel HD 4000 video driver?

let me try again tonight; i had it restored to factory default settings already before sending in to for second RMA for backlit keyboard

and now that we are on the subject....got my laptop back after second RMA, keyboard is worse than before, i cant power on because the keyboard is 80% unresponsive. even if i manage to get it on, keyboard stays lit all the time, and half the keys do not respond at all. fn-keys do not work either; had to use touchpad or plug in a usb keyboard to navigate my way around. most likely the repair guys screwed it up big time

if i manage to turn it on again i will test again tonight; already submitted a THIRD rma a few hrs ago.....this is getting frustrating

ok just tested with the drivers, starting from default factory state windows 7 home premium, bios is 212

    - remove default atk drivers from control panel, reboot
    - system complains no atk installed, install latest atk drivers (download from asus website), reboot
    - remove default intel display drivers from control panel - this gives me a blank screen during uninstall (where normally when the screen switches to 800x600 when u dont have a proper display driver). i just let it be while the HDD light keeps blinking and working, after awhile i just blindly press enter a few times and rebooted itself, screen is fine when laptop reboots at bios (with asus logo) and boots fine and windows boots fine though screen res is 800x600
    - install latest intel display drivers (download from intel website), no blank screen anymore, reboot and returns to native 1080p res

intel HD graphics 4000 driver is now 9.17.10.2875 according to device manager

I have a similar problem.. with an UX32VD, 1366x resolution.

Out of the box, it was sometimes going to a BLANK screen after Win logo - upon start-up, resume from standby or hibernate. All fans, leds, cpu working. Backlight is on, but no video signal.

I then did a complete new install of Win 7. Same thing.

    What I found out:
    - it is indeed a video card issue! Intel HD 4000
    - does not happen every time, maybe 20-30% of resumes
    - only way NOT TO GET A BLANK SCREEN is: uninstall video card => restart => Win-7 detects a Standard VGA adapter. With this native support I get NO BLANK SCREEN. Of course, I also lose functionality - no sleep, less hotkeys, no ext.display, etc.
    - uninstalled HD4000 and tried with newest Intel drivers V9.17.10.xx, also with older - V8.15.10.2696.02. No success.
    - for recovery: way out of blank screen is to go to sleep again (fn-f1) and resume OR press fn-f7 1-2 times for screen toggle

    ANYONE, has a real solution???

    Another issue --- Magnet/lid issue:
    - if I put my UX32VD in a bag, the upper lid flaps open. Magnet is not strong enough to hold the 2 lids together. Anyone has the same problem??

    Regarding the notorious "Fan/noise issue":
    - for me, updating the BIOS to 212 has solved the noise issue. Fans went maybe once in a week.

This sounds more like a driver issue on Intel's end, and not Asus (despite the driver being downloaded from Asus' site). Hopefully the latest revision corrects the problem. I'm going to dig a little deeper on this.

Prostar, thanks for answering. Your help will be greatly appreciated!!! I have bumped my head on this BLANK screen for days now.

As mentioned, a Standard VGA adapter driver does not cause BLANK SCREEN. Old and new Intel drivers do - both from ASUS support page and Intel page! Every 5th start-up or resume is a blank screen..

Still doing some research, but thank you (both for your thank you and for the annexed info). :)

If it is in fact directly a problem with the Intel HD 4000 controller, then you can try to apply a chipset update. See if that rectifies the issue (the "video card" would actually be your NVidia 620M).

As for the magnet problem, you can attempt to strengthen the magnet - although I don't know if the conventional method of doing so is wise to apply to a laptop, where internal components are sensitive to magnetism and can be damaged by it.

If you'd like to try, here are simple instructions: http://www.ehow.com/how_6872622_strengthen-magnets.html (I do not promote nor decry attempting this!)

Guys, been a week since I uninstall driver from Asus and re-install driver from Intel 9.17.10.2875. No more blank screens from hibernation and sleep. I've tested it from start-up to shutdown, hibernation and sleep around 10 times, it resume perfectly.

However, the uninstalling part is a-bit tricky. Everything goes blank but luckily it rebooted and I went straight to SAFE MODE (F8) and re-install the driver downloaded from Intel.

    Hope that helps.

Oddly, a Google search didn't yield much of an answer or any insight. I guess it was just a garden variety, incompatible driver.

I tried this and it did not work for me. The screen was still black (always black, no startup logo, etc), so I decided to return it.

Try entering safe mode with VGA.. This way you should be able to install the proper drivers.

Switching to the 9.17.10.2875 driver worked for me!! I have been fighting this problem for weeks! Before - when i did an uninstall (Device Manager -> Intel HD 4000 -> Uninstall), Win 7 detected a Standard VGA adapter with low resolution => no blank screens, but crappy resolution w/o extras. Now - uninstall => permanent blank screen => restarted => same thing!

Then, I went into Safe Mode (F8) and found that Windows went back to Intel driver version .2867! It seems to be causing the trouble => Install .2875 under Safe Mode => reboot => all fine!

Damn, no blank screen the last 15 times... BUT I just restarted - BLANK screen again! It seems the above did not solve it. Maybe h/w issue ??
