I am using Windows 10 on my UX32 on which I recently replaced the keyboard (2 months ago) and it has started to turn off unexpectedly with no BSOD in the past week. The screen just turns black. Sometimes in 2 minutes and sometimes upto 3 hours. I have concluded that it is not windows since it does so on Linux aswell. It is not due to heating either because I have replaced coolant recently and it turns off on 50-53C or even at 40-42C.
    Specs:
    i5-4200U
    8GB RAM (one is installed)
    NVIDIA 840M
    500GB HDD

    All help appreciated

That is an Optimus system, meaning it can use iGPU or dGPU. Perhaps one of them is defective and the black screen happens when it's switching. Try disabling the 840M or force it to turn on by running a benchmark.

And is the system still running when the issue happens or is it merely lacking a display?

It boots fine and I have played several HD videos on it to heck temperatures. One thing that bothers me is that my nvidia gpu doesnt show up in device manager at all so I doubt that I'll be able to run a benchmark. It doesnt show with lspci in linux and also nvidia control panel has disappeared which I didnt seem to notice yet.
It completely turns off and doesnt just lose display.
Edit: device manager says that the card is not working because it is disconnected amd asks to reconnect.(Code 45)

That is not a good sign, most likely indicating hardware failure. Although the dGPU is soldered you may still be able to revive it by baking, preferably by using a heat gun and aiming only at the 840M chip and its surroundings. Fixed an old AMD-based bga system like that a few weeks ago.
