Bringing the visibility up on a question ghettocowboy had in the U6S thread....

BestBuy has the U6S-X1 listed with a 128Mb 8600M G. Anyone confirm this? I've tried calling two BestBuy stores that have it in stock in Cali with no luck (Fresno and ElkGrove).

BB is notorious for having incorrect information on their website. The 8600m G does not exist. There's an 8400m G, and an 8600m GS.

Yeah, First, I thought it is a typo as well but I ran into the ebay posting and saw the same thing, the seller lists it that the laptop has 8600M G Video card. I asked the seller the question regarding of the video card and he responded that that laptop indeed has 8600M G video but only 128mb of RAM. This would be great for those that want a faster video card than 8400M GS and not overly kill to conserve battery life, than this is a great news. Here is Ebay Listing for the U6S-X1

The 8600m G does not exist. It is not possible for something that does not exist to be powering a laptop.

Also, the BB website has the card listed as a Geforce Go 8600m G, while Nvidia has retired the "Go" moniker with their 7000 series.

The guy on ebay simply got his specs from the best buy site, which has it listed incorrectly.

    Stay away from best buy...
    1. you gotta pay tax
    2. any ASUS purchased from there only has 1 yr warranty
    3. the ASUS 1 yr accidental damage warranty does not appy at best buy

After calling a few stores, it looks like a few stores got them, two each. These come in plain brown boxes, no data on the outside with just the laptop inside. I got one store to open the box but they could not confirm what their web site says. They just saw the hardware inside and closed it up, no one had a demo unit. Their RSS Toolkit (read: intranet) had the same description. I'm sure they share the same sku data. Hopefully they correct the information soon.

IIRC the U6S has the 8400m G seems that all of the ASus notebooks have the 8400m G not the GS or GT versions. I"m kind of interested in the U6s, either that or the F9S

Me too, I am debating between the 2, I am weighing the price differences in both: the U6S is thinner and has backlit display and 2gb of ram as standard, 0.5lb lighter, but is it worth $350 - $400 in price??
And of course, the U6S looks more attractive too

The F9S is not worth it. At the same price, the W7S has superior build quality and a larger screen without increasing any of the dimensions.

And yes, the U6S is worth the increase in price. IMO, best ultraportable performance notebook on the market atm.

I agree with you in terms of build quality. I"ve had a W5Ae and a W5Fm and those are far better than the f9 series. Although this is what is stopping me from a W7S is the fact it only has vga and s-video out. If it had HDMI i'd snatch it up no questions asked. I don't recall seeing HDMI on the W7S, but I could be wrong.

The only difference between the 8400M GS nad the 8600M GS is that the 8600 has a 128bits rather than a 64bits and is supposed to have GDDR3 memory (but it doesn't). So the 8600M GS and 8400M GT are the same card, AKA 8500GT. The 8400M GS is slightly under with his 64bits bus

Yep - no HDMI. My 1080p LCD TV actually has a VGA in that gives the full 1080p though, so it wasn't a big problem for me. My problem with the W7S originally was the 2.5GB RAM limit due to the 512MB stick of RAM soldered in. I realized that I really wouldn't need more than that in the functional life of the notebook though (2 years or so - I have a pretty quick turnaround), so it was fine.

Yeah I got the U6S-X1 from best buy about 2 weeks ago. It doesn't have the 8600 but the 8400M so it's a major typo.
Never liked Best Buy anyways, but there wasn't many other stores selling the U6S

But VGA is not HDCP I believe, so it could be a problem if there were to hve a BD/HDDVD drive on the noteb ook

well to stop debating.. go on support.asus.com and download the manual. :D 12" can't fit 8600. 8400 only though.

Jeszzz, nice machine , comes at a high cost like other asus notebook.

I got to play with it at my local BB. I have to say it is a lot thinner than I thought it would be. The LED backlit screen is amazing! That alone made me want to get it. Even at it's darkest setting it was still just as bright and much more clear and vibrant than the other laptops on full brightness.

I was at BB to test screen clarity and resolution out in Excel between different brands, basically see how for I could zoom out and still read the numbers. Many topped out at 50%, with blurry arial 10 pt txt, but still legible, while others topped out at 60% zoom. The U6S screen was extremely sharp at 50% zoom level in excel. I didn't go below 50% because I was so impressed by the clarity.. and any smaller and my eyes would pop out from strain

Only thing I disliked about it was the mouse buttons. They were very hard to push and very clunky feeling. They didn't feel right for such sleek machine
