    Hi,

I have at least one problem with my ASUS notebook. From time to time something strange happens. Although the notebook is running with the power supply it says “official” that it takes the power from the battery. “Official” means that the icon near the time turns to the battery icon and that the display is getting darker. But the notebook still gets the energy from the power supply! The battery doesn’t run down. And even if one takes of the battery the notebook is running.
This is really annoying but also has a further consequence. In this status it is not possible to shut down the notebook. If I want to switch to the energy saving mode, especially by closing the notebook, the PC is calculating for some time (as usual) but then nothing happens. It just doesn’t go to the energy saving mode. The display is black but I guess everything else is running. Normally the LED should twinkle but that doesn’t happen. I’m also unable to awake the notebook. The only possibility is do press the power button for several seconds but this is not an adequate way to shut down – all unsaved data is lost.
If I want to switch idle mode (by pressing the power button once) the same happens. Few seconds of calculation but than the notebook doesn’t switch off. But in this case I can do it manual by pressing the power button for several seconds which is an adequate way to shut down. I think after this procedure my notebook works the way it should do. That means it doesn’t go to the strange mode in which it doesn’t know from where it gets its energy.
Restart is possible (at least from time to time) shut down not (with the described symptoms)

When it switches to that mode? I don’t know exactly but I have two presumptions:
    a) It will always do so after a “formal” restart (after starting a new windows session). The time it needs for that is more or less arbitrary, but I’m pretty sure it will happen always.
    b) It won’t happen until one is doing something. I think the switch to the strange mode doesn’t happen without any input. Usually I notice it immediately. But the actions that lead to it are miscellaneous. Deleting a file, play a song in winamp…

I’m not sure whether the notebook is working correct after the described procedure with the idle mode. In fact there was twice a problem with shutting down anyway but this can have other reasons. I have a speculation why the shut down doesn’t work in the strange mode: Maybe because the notebook thinks that it gets its energy from the battery and cuts this supply while it is in fact provided by the power supply.
Does anybody have a clue how to cure my notebook from this misperception?

    Welcome to the forums!

Cute personification of your notebook :)

Also thanks for the very detailed information about the problem! Not many people go through the trouble of writing such a detailed account...

As a first step, I would suggest to uninstall the ACPI drivers and utilities (all prefixed by "ATK" in the ASUS filenames), and either a) reinstall the same versions or b) (preferable option) download newer versions from support.asus.com and install those, if any are available.

I am saying this since your problems seem to be power-management related.

    Post back with the results.

I have done so and until now ervything works fine. Hard to say whether the problem is solved or not. I will tell if my notebook continues to think in an obviously wrong way.
    Thanks anyway,
