I opened up my G50Vm-X1 to put in a second harddrive and discovered that I need a tray to mount it in there with. Does anyone know where I can get on that will work? I've tried a couple trays from other laptops, but the screw holes don't match up. Is this something I need to go to ASUS to get?

    Thanks.

You'll have to order one from asus's e-store, however they seem to rarely be in stock as I have been waiting for one for well over a month. I just threw the hard drive in there for now with only the support from the pads in there, and all seems to be working fine.

Is there foam on the second bay? If so, it's more than enough to stabilize the HDD, unless you're playing football with the G50 as the ball.

I just used the foam that was there, connected the drive re-booted and I was in business.

If you plan on storing highly sensitive info on the second drive get the bracket but I gave it a test "shake" before I fired it up and the drive remained stable resting on the foam.

If your plan for a second HDD is a SSD then you will be more than ok using just the foam to secure it as they made SSDs to be extremely shock resistant (no moving parts).

I'll be trying to install it tonight. I hadn't considered a SSD. That could be very cool to have as I'm just adding a drive for some additional storage.

No one in their right mind should use or consider an SSD for their secondary drive.

The performance difference between rotary and solid state tech alone is reason enough to only use it as a primary, with the rotary being for data storage and other less used information access.

I would second that, do not install a SSD with the purpose of using it as the "secondary" storage drive.

By all means install a SSD (i.e. a second HD) but make sure you use it to run your OS and Applications.

You would then use the already included 320GB 7200 HDD as your storage "secondary" drive.
