Here are some pictures of S96j. I think the lid looks so much better than with the black stripe that I saw in earlier picture. I tried to include some close-ups and I have several of cpu/gpu cooler which I think is fantastic design. Enjoy!

Yeah, are the ridges removable or something? Or did they just not come with it? I see they are still present on the inside.

I believe the geared2play pictures are of the Z96j. The whole lid in pictures on their S96j page look different than the actual S96j, it is not just the black stripe. From the pictures I haved seen the rest of it looks the same.

It looks nicer indeed...May i ask at which dealer you bought it? I hope the z96j will be like that too.
Small detail: What happened to the asus sticker?

I suppose that since it's VBI (Verified by Intel) and warrantied by Intel that Intel has all the rights to it... so it's practically an Intel laptop, therefore no need to lable it ASUS? This is going to be great, no brand so no one will even consider stealing it!! Much better than having an amazing W3J chasis sitting on the table letting everyone gawk at it and want to have it (and then steal it!)

    magicdud,
I only bought the barebones (for $580) and I got it from ExcaliberPC. I have several of the parts and OS all ready. I picked up the parts I did not have from ZipZoomFly (which will be here tomorrow). I would have bought notebook from other reseller/builder but they all bundle the optical drive which I recently bought. If I was going to have someone assemble it for me I would go with geared2play or GenTech PC.

As for Asus sticker, there are none. It does not say Asus anywhere on chasis (it doesn't say Intel either). It came with very limited paper documentation but did come with 4 - 5 cds with documentation, programs (like Nero), and drivers. 2 of the paper documents that were in box were from Intel. One of these was a flyer about custom lids that work on the S96j.

To help me assemble I dowloaded following:
    http://cache-www.intel.com/cd/00/00/28/42/284251_284251.pdf

    ycd.tsai,
I took the pictures myself. I got the S96j today.

Kierkegaard, I thought you were die hard w3j. i imagined you screaming "W3J or BUST!". just the fact that you consider this as your backup makes me think I made the right choice choosing the s96j :p
Just keep saying to yourself "W3J is a sexy beast!"

LOL, I am all about the w3j but I'm no dogmatist. And I recognize a good deal when I see one (err, in this case I do anyway). Ehh, what the hell do I know anyway? I'm the most indecisive person you will ever meet, I swear.

Great pics, FlipTwisteR. The lid is a little different from the Z96J... I actually like this lid better.

I actually like the whole "sleeper" idea. I think it looks good, although I kinda did like the Built on Asus stickers. Oh well. Let us know how it went putting it together!

In the first picture the screen looks like a matte finish.

It is not matte. It is glossy.

Can I ask, how bad is the glare? Is it really distracting? I have never had a glossy screen and it looks like I will for my next lappy(s96 or z96)

I'm in the same boat, I really did not want a glossy screen either. I really wanted a WXGA screen so it was going to be glossy for both notebooks I was looking at. I went to Best Buy and played with some glossy notebooks there. It is not nearly as distracting as I thought it would be.

I have just installed windows and drivers and the colors are more vibrant. It looks very nice but it is distracting if there is light or windows behind you. If there are no light or windows behind you it is fine. At this point I still prefer non-glossy but I imagine this will grow on me.

I recommend going to store and trying them first. I can not imagine it would be a deal breaker for you but you never know...

I like the look better also. Looks nice how the body just under the monitor hinging is that lined black and so is the mouse buttons.

It's a little sparse without the Asus badging, but I like it none-the-same.

Talking about how nice it looks, I will say it is about at the level of most Acer notebooks.

With the performance and the warranty and guarantee being thrice that of Acer's I'm willing to accept it.
