I recently was granted a lemon replacement of an old Toshiba laptop at Best-Buy. The primary user for this machine is my son; in addition to using the machine for schoolwork he is learning game development. He has worked a number of years mastering GameMaker and is now moving on to XNA game development for Windows and XBox 360.

The Geeks pointed us towards the Asus G50Vm-x1 as the best bang for the buck machine in the size and weight range we were looking for. Though the Geeks were lacking in knowledge on a number of points; the biggest being that they were adamant I had to run a 64-bit OS on the machine and would be unable to run my 32-bit Vista Ultimate on the machine. I did not pay them much heed on this point as my work laptop has a 64 bit processor and is running 32 bit Vista Enterprise. They were certainly eager to give me a deal on 64 bit Ultimate IF I allowed them to "prep" the machine before taking home. I politely declined the offer to screw up the machine before I even had gotten it home. Additionally in all the conversations neither the ExpressGate feature, nor the ability to add a second hard-drive, nor the fact that this was a stripped down version of the retail machine was brought to my attention.

As I received almost $700 of in-store credit it was not an option to purchase the machine from a different source.

As of now the machine more than meets my son's needs for a development platform and has no problems running the games that he is working on. All that being said I have a few questions about the machine and future upgrades. I have attempted to search for the answers before making this post so as to not be redundant.

    OS Install:
I attempted to install XP Pro but constantly received the BSOD during the loading of the installer; is it possible to install XP? How?
What is required to install XP on a G50V?
Where can I get the XP drivers for video, audio, wireless, ...?
Has anyone set theirs up to dual boot XP/Vista?

    Bluetooth:
I know other versions of the G50V include an internal Bluetooth card.
Is it possible to install an internal Bluetooth on this model?
If so, which adapters are supported? Where is it installed?

    Disassembly:
Understanding that certain actions will void the Best-Buy warranty that I was required to purchase as part of the replacement deal; has anyone documented the steps in disassembling the G50V laptop? I am looking for something along the lines of the guides found at http://repair4laptop.org/disassembly_asus.html. I have referenced these in the past with the Toshiba machines with much success.

    Upgradeable components:
Understanding that currently the cost for the upgrades is more than the cost to buy the beefier model. Which of the following components can I upgrade and what are the suggested replacement parts?

    CPU:
I have seen a number of posts on this but the typical post I saw was aimed at asking about a single processor. I would like to know the processor family/families that the motherboard supports.

    Memory:
Currently the memory is running at 667MHZ. How fast of memory can the machine support? Does it depend on the processor? Is this just a change in the BIOS?

    GPU:
From the posts that I have seen it appears that this component can not be upgraded. If this is incorrect, what are the upgrade options?

    Thank You
