The only reason I haven't bought a Asus W3J yet is because of its low resolution wxga screen.

How much trouble would I have to go through to replace the screen with something that has a higher resolution? I know it'll void the warrenty. Will most 14.1" widescreen moniters work, or do I have to find a specific model?

    thanks

I'm sure it will be quite difficult to do this... If you want a higher resolution screen, just wait for the A8js... it's supposed to have a higher resolution screen and the 7700Go. Now, may I ask why you even want something with higher resolution. The W3j's native resolution is 1280x786 and that is a 16:9 ratio. I think it's a great screen, anything with higher resolution would be to small... If you were able to find a 14" higher resolution screen that’s the same 16:9 ratio, it might fit, but no doubt about it, it would void your warranty.

Why is this in desktop hardware? Shouldn't it be in hardware upgrades or mods or something?

Anyway, yes, there are different interfaces for different LCD's, and it's a non-trivial procedure with most laptops. There are very few 1440x900 screens available in the 14.1" form, and you'd have to do a lot of research to figure out what connection the LCD has, your laptop has, if they're compatible, and it would be a very expensive mistake if you got the wrong thing. Best thing I can recommend would be to get an external monitor for usage when you're not traveling with it, and to get a virtual desktop program like VirtuaWin. It's the only way I can use any computer any more.

If you would like to replace a LCD screen panel, it will give you much touble when doing it yourself. Taking out the cover, disconnect the wire, different or uncompatible power connector have a headache on this. To replace a LCd panel would be more expensive than adding a 19" wide screen external LCD monitor for indoor use. You will be enjoyable to see a bigger screen on it.
