Greetings - I am looking at getting an Asus N80 to replace the F8Sa that I sold last month. I wasn't happy at all with the battery life on the F8Sa - and the ATI 2600 graphics were so-so. I have read many pages of the N80 review thread, and done a search, but I cannot find much about ExpressGate. I will probably replace the factory HDD if I buy an N80; does anyone know if ExpressGate resides in the BIOS or is it a partition on the HDD? If its a partition, does Asus include a separate installation CD/DVD for it or is it just installed as part of the factory restore DVD process? Thanks in advance...

Initial reports indicated that it was hardwired onto the MB, but later discussions centered around the possibility that part or all of it was on the HDD with the intiation routine just on the MB..... I was more inclined to believe the former based on Asus' press, but there were credible reports of there being more of a hybrid scenario with at least some being on the HDD.

In any event, I don't think it's part of any reinstall routine (DVD, etc) that Asus provides, and I haven't recalled seeing anyone talk about having to reinstall EG if they wipe the Vista install for a clean one. EG is known to NOT work under XP. If you do a block level clone of all the N80's partitions for the new drive, I wouldn't see why it wouldn't work as that would cover both scenarios, but I don't know for sure.

Actually, you have to install expressgate (should be on your drivers disk) on your hard drive in order for it to work. At the same time, the BIOS must support expressgate as well.

As for XP compatibility, it works without any issues. In fact, I'm posting this reply through the splashtop browser in expressgate with my XP U6V. :)

Gentlemen, Thank you for your replies. I would have replied earlier but I kept getting an error trying to post ... :( EG sounds like a great addition - but I keep seeing ugly comments about the N80's LCD and keyboard. Thanks again!

Huh -- I thought I'd seen posts around here that talked about EG not working when people were installing XP on their new Vista systems..... Oh, well, my mistake I guess. :(
