I have just pre-ordered the 1000HE from Amazon. I'm thinking of upgrading the RAM. Is "OCZ 2 GB PC2-5400 667 MHz DDR2 Value SODIMM Laptop Memory" a good choice? I can get it from Amazon for $28. Any other suggestion?

Also, is 2GB the max for RAM upgrade with the 1000HE? And, how do I know which memory is compatible with the 1000HE?

The 1000HE takes 667 MHz DDR2 SODIMM, so it should work. Any with those specs should work. 2GB is max.

It comes standard with 1GB memory in a single slot, so if you replace it with a 2GB memory stick (DDR2 PC-5300 SODIMM), then you would now have 2GB total memory.

I have just received my EEE PC 1000HE today. But the RAM upgrade doesn't seem to work.

This was what I did. First, I started the machine to check on the RAM size. It showed 0.99 GB. Then I shut down the machine and replaced it with a 2GB RAM that I bought from Amazon (OCZ 2 GB PC2-5400 667 MHz DDR2 Value SODIMM Laptop Memory). I started the machine again, right clicked on My Computer, then Properties. But it still showed 0.99 GB of RAM.

Does anyone know how to fix it? Anything that I have missed? Am I using the wrong stick?

I had the exact same issue with mine at the beginning. Try re-seating the ram until the 2gb show in your system properties.
I'm not sure why it only shows 0.99gb at first, but if you use EVEREST, it will always report 2gb.

You have to go into the EEE PC bios (hit f2 repeatedly on bootup) and set the ram there to recognize the 2gb or it will just recognize the 1gb by default. Unconventional but that's how it is.

Problem is now resolved. I actually called up Asus tech support. They said I need to update the bios from their website. I followed suit and it finally solved the problem. Thanks everyone for the help.

Weird.... I don't remember updating my BIOS and the problem seemed to have solved itself. Either way, that's great you have that issue fixed now.

Quite a bit. As Red_Dragon mentioned, it will definitely help with your multi-tasking usage.

Huh? Sorry, but i'm not familiar with the term "internet explorer".... it's not in my vocabulary :p
