I have an Asus M5N. The power cord is coming apart quite near where you plug it in to the computer - right near the bit where it bends. The casing has split a bit and you can just see the wires poking out a bit. It's frustrating trying to work with it plugged in, because it keeps changing back and forth between AC mode and battery mode constantly, sometimes every couple of seconds. At times it doesn't show correctly whether it's on battery or mains power - for example, it will show the battery symbol and 'running man' in the task bar, and the screen will be dimmed, but at the same time, the recharging battery light will be on.

Is it dangerous to keep using the power cord when it's frayed like this?
Is the power cord something specific to Asus, or could it be replaced with some generic cord?
Is it something that would be covered under Warranty? (the computer is less than 2 years old)

I agree it is bad to keep working like this...
I don't think it will be covered under warranty, but you can pick up a generic AC adapter for pretty cheap if you can't get an Asus one. Just be sure to pick one that has the same wattage rating.

any asus reseller in the UK will prob carry a cord for it. or just type the model number of the adapter into google and you will find a place that sells them.

The top one on this list http://www.asuslaptop.co.uk/products.php?cat=23 should be OK.

This PSU http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=32852&criteria=Notebook Adaptors&doy=30m3 is less expensive but doesn't have 19V. However, you may find that the 18V setting works OK. If you have a Maplin store nearby then you might be able to try out the PSU. Maplin does have another PSU rated at 19V http://www.maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?TabID=1&criteria=Notebook Adaptors&ModuleNo=42622&doy=30m3, but it has a much higher power rating and will be significantly bigger and heavier.

thanks a lot; that one on top of the list does look like the thing, exactly as I've got now. Expensive, though, for what it is!! I wonder how I can keep from bending it again next time - it's just where the cord naturally bends when it plugs into the machine.

I suppose I could email the warranty people and see if by any chance it is covered, but I bet there's something in the warranty that excludes it!

I wondered about a generic power adapter - I thought this one was quite small, though, and wasn't sure if that was something Asus-specific, but maybe it's more to do with the wattage. I definitely want something as small as possible, as that was the point of getting this model. I think there is a Maplin's around here somewhere, so perhaps I'll see what they recommend first, before going for the Asus one.

I also don't want to use anything that might damage things somehow and/or invalidate the warranty I have left.

Has anyone used that company, asuslaptop?
