Hello everyone! This is directed mainly at ASUS distributors and resellers on the forum, and anyone else who might have an idea on the status of W1 Carbon and prospects of buying it. I posted a message couple of months ago about the regular, aluminum W1V. My lust for this computer came to an end when I saw it's even handsomer twin - namely the W1 carbon! :) After a string of sleepless nights I decided that it is the one for me and nothing will come between us!

I found out it was sold in a couple of stores in UK during Christmas, and now they are sold out and aren't planning to renew the stock. I talked to some distributors, resellers and ASUS UK, Asus USA - everyone seems to give me different answers regarding it's availability. Some say it hasn't been reseased in stores yet and will come in a couple of months (2-5). Others say that this was a Limited Edition Christmas sale and ASUS won't be producing any more of them. I am totally confused and noone i talked to seems to know anything, even ASUS themselves. It's on the website yet I can't find it sold anywhere (except one dodgy italian internet store). All the internet press releases do not mention any dates except that Christmas sale in UK. I was hoping someone on this forum might know what's going on with that, i remember on one of the threads Mr. Proportable mentioning possibly bringing several black W1 chassisses (? however its spelled) to US in a couple of months. If it will be sold in the near future, anywhere, does anyone know an approximate time frame? Or am I waiting in vain?

    Thank you forumites!

    Katerina.

Asus has extra lids made -- and that's ALL that defined the difference between the all aluminum model and the carbon model.... the lid.

We are bringing in the W1j hopefully by April....... the carbon fiber lid MAY be available, but Asus wants far too many to be purchased, so that's still in limbo.

Either way - this would be a dealer swap as NO W1j's in the world as going to be available with it....... it was originally set up to sell extra W1v's that were made and not sold (probably because the US never imported them and Asus lost this market for them)....... so it was limited, just to help get rid of the model.

Your best chance is to buy a W1j when it comes out and if we can get in the lids by then, we can swap it, but you're looking at at least $100 for that lid....... at least.... and like I said, it's only if the numbers can even work out.

... and my name is Justin.

Thank you for the uber quick reply, Justin! :)
When you say "the lid is the only difference", that means that the interior is still silver + black, instead of all black like the W2V? Sorry for the anal-retentiveness, but i didn't mind the aluminum lid - rather, I didn't like the combination of light grey aluminum surface and black plastic keyboard and screen in the original W1V - i much more prefer the uniform apple-like design of the Carbon fiber laptop as advertised by ASUS. (Sigh...)

No, the W1v only came in a matching color to the W2..... black anodized brushed aluminum....

The "carbon fiber" model still have the black brushed palmrest--- just like the w2.... but for the record, the w1j will come over looking just like the old W1n, but in exactly the same colors as the W2v.

Ooooooo' tempting to get one of those lids. Justin why did you even let us know about it.

Now I'm going to have to get one if they're available, you horrible, horrible person :(

    hahaha

Oh crap I'm so dumb it's the W1V, so it won't fit the Z70Va, or will it?

Isn't the z70va some sort of carbon fibre lid already?

Well, one reason we didn't bring it over as the W1v..... was because with the same configuration as the W2 - it was the same price...... and Asus didn't want them competing against each other and thought at the same price more people would go for the 17" model......

So..... it's going to depend on configuration, but you can almost bet it'll have to be a lower spec than the W2, because Asus wants it's pricing more inbetween the V6 and W2.... sorta to fill that gap.

As long as they don't go lower than the current w1v spec-wise, i am a-ok! My main requirement is the graphics, so i hope they won't be worse than the current X700. So I assume then, that W1j will be with Intel Core Duo?

I'm talking cpu, harddrive and ram....... those will have to be lower than what they put in the w2 to bring the cost down.
