My notebook and it's DVD Multi Recorder (DVD+R DL) recently has been very noisy, when I'm loading any sort of cd it starts to click, sounding like the top of the cd/dvd is grazing along with the roof or something, different sounds for how much work load is taken from the cd/dvd, there are no sounds when it's basically idling and is very noisy when burning. I've tried many different cds/dvds and it all has the same problem so I'm assuming it's the dvd drive, it's a bother for me when I'm sitting in a office meeting and there is a relatively loud clicking noise coming out of my notebook. Can I go to ASUS and get it repaired or do I do it myself?

Any suggestions or comments would be greatly appriciated.

    Thanks.

relax! its normal for notebook drives to be noisy.
i personally have 4 laptop computers in my home and they all have noisy optical drives (especially the HPs they sound like motorcycles) so i take it that its normal! :)

I think it depends on the manufacturer. The Hitachi/LG DVD writer on my T60 is dead silent. Burning or reading, I've got to have my ear glued to the drive to actually hear it spinning.

My optical drive makes a sound like it's dying when it's reading a lot of data, otherwise it's a normal sound (for a laptop-drive)

It has been known to happen. i know what a dead optical drive sounds like. I cant explain i really. If its just noisy but reads most media and writes most media then typically i would say there is nothing wrong. i have seen maybee once or twice abnormally noise new drives. The only way to find out is to try aimilar drive. Laptop drives are typically noisy and can cause vibration with various media. Without anyone hearing there is no way for us to tell you if its abnormal or not.

Is there any good info on the Spin Rate or Spin Down time &/or adjusting software for us newbies to make sense of it?

I'm sure nothing is wrong with my drive, I just tried to point out that laptop-drives can be very noisy

No i had the same problem! its not normal! I've got/had three asus notebooks in teh last 6 months and there was a problem with one of the drives, sent it in, and they agreed there was a problem and replaced it.

I actually only send in the drive and not the whole notebook.

so I know the grating sound he;s hearing and its not pretty! The new one still makes a little noise, but it doesnt sound abnormal

    get it changed!

When I first bought the notebook I have had no problems and it's only been happening recently, also when I watch dvds running off the dvd drive it seems to freeze every 5 or so minutes when the drive slows down, then I have to wait still it starts spinning up again before the video unfreezes.

With the speed it's spinning it sounds very slow, how fast are the dvd drives suppose to read/spin?
