Can't find anything about this laptop online, except on a french website.

    Looks quite interesting:

    Core2Duo 7200
    2Go Ram
    X1700HP (256/256)
    160Go SAta
    HDMI, DVB tuner, remote control
    1680x1050
    Windows Media Center

    1750€

The price seems quite OK given the X1700, the HDMI and TV tuners functionnalities. Does someone has more info on this machine? User manual, photos, whatever?

If you're in North America, you're not going to get one. We decided almost a couple years ago now not to bring the W1 in again... Instead, we'll be bringing in the V1jp early in 2007.

Oh, well when you said "can't find anything except on this french site", I assumed you were anywhere BUT France.... but you got me!

Since this site is has mainly North American members - I like to make sure to follow up post like this to let people when or if it'll be here (and how the configuration might differ). We get a lot of calls on models that we're never going to import and they usually come from posts like this. I just figure it's best to cut it off at the source for that reason..... but the more information the better.

    Just wondering - is the W1/V1 a 15" model?

    the website is www.microrama.com

They have quite a good reputation, especially for asus products. Plus they have a real (small) shop in Paris, so if you don't want to rely too much on websites, you can go there directly.

Question, I'm comparing machines from the A8/F3 series and W series. From what I understand from Asus website (very poor in terms of marketing...) and forums, the build quality is much better in the W series, right? I see also that there is a Zero Pixel guarantee for the LCD screen. So I'm quite hesitating between several models, and there is a real price difference between those two series for the same specifications. I really like the look of the Ws, but I don't want to pay more just for a good looking computer, even if it's a criteria just like any other one. I'm trying to find reviews for the W1 (15.4"), but I can't find any, especially for the recent models. So if anyone here compared the different series and can give me some advices, it would be more than welcome! Thanks!

    risbac,

I haven't had a chance to inspect the construction of the W series, however, based on what I have heard from other reviewers/distributors and based on my ownership of the F3Jm, I would look at the higher-end models (like the W series). One of the reasons I am looking to turn this model in for a higher-end model is the plastic construction. I would much rather have something with a higher-resolution screen and stronger chassis. Hope this helps.

Ok, you can't compare the F3/A8 with the W1... that's almost sacrilegious to anyone following the "faith" of Asus... the F3 is a good notebook, but "average"... a little better build than something you'd get from dell...... The first thing I tell people about the W1/W2, is that the palmrest and lid are made of an 1/8" sheet of brushed aluminum which is then anodized..... that a lone should speak to the rest of the laptop. It's like everything that was great about the G4 powerbooks, but better.... and none of what was wrong with them..

The V1 is no W1, but it's as close as can be... it's more similiar to the V6 and W3 than the W1, and a lot of people own those models so they know the type of high end quality I'm talking about. The thing about the W1 and W2 that sets them off are the thick sheets of brushed aluminum (close to 1/8") on the palmrests and lids... that has a feel and a stiffness like no other... basically "overbuilt" for a laptop...... The V1 is lighter than the W1 and it's because those pieces aren't the same thickness... I love the W1 and always have, but if you're going to carry this around, you don't need quite that level of quality. The V1 is excellent, don't get me wrong..... Like the V6, the V1 cuts a bit of weight to be more mobile... we'd all love our cars to be bullet proof, but the added weight ruins fuel economy and and accelleration... you need the right mix, and that's something I think the V1 has..... It was also designed around today's chipset which is more efficient than the first generation centrino.... That was no P4 setup, but things have improved and that allows for things to get smaller and other things to fit where they couldn't before... So a new design can often help take advantage of things like that.
