    My poor dead A8Js

So after surfing these forums for some time and checking and re-checking my options I finally settled on my machine and ordered an A8Js from MilestonePC (for the BlueTooth and with an extra gig of memory installed) last November. It arrived promptly and everything was great, it was everything I hoped it would be and then some. It's easily scuffed lid is probably my biggest complaint.

But then last Saturday in the middle of working on something it went dead, and has refused to turn back on since then. What ever combination of power/battery I use the power button has no effect what-so-ever.

So it has to go back to ASUS, I talked to their tech support and they're sending me instructions on how to send it back.

My question is this, I have several months of family photos and a couple of weeks of code on the HD that I really don't want to loose so what are my options? I'm pretty sure the HD is OK, and that it's some kind of power issue but understandably their support couldn't guarantee anything. Are hard drives typically wiped when they're sent in for repair?

    Thanks for any info,
    - Jeff

If a major part has to be replaced, like the motherboard, then they will normally format the notebook and send it back to you. You can still save the data that is one the hard dis, by connecting it to a desktop computer. Your notebooks has a SATA hard disk interface, so you will need a desktop with a SATA port. It shouldn't be too difficult to get the data off the hard disk, and then send the notebook in.

Thanks for the reply, that sounds like a great solution but doesn't pulling out the HD void the warranty?

No, it shouldn't void the warranty. Almost all manufacturers allow RAM and hard disk upgrades, so if you remove the hard disk to simply extract data, then Asus won't mind at all.

Thanks Zero, that solution is working great now that I've found the required hardware here in the office. My files are even now streaming to safety.

    Thanks again,

a week ago my a8js went dead when it was at 3% battery.

the power button wouldnt do anything, although the orange charging light went on.

I let it charge for a day and it still wouldnt turn on.

So I emailed btotech and he emailed me this no start guide

    remove battery
unplug ac from the wall and laptop for 10 sec. plug it back in to the wall and laptop with battery unplugged. does it turn on?
remove both ram. does it turn on?
greed led on the brick is lit?

Ok well I did this unplugged from ac then unplugged the battery, then plugged in ac (NOT leave it in ac and remove the battery, doing exactly that was what worked) And it started

There is a fuse that needs to reset in this matter when the battery gets drained. And it doesnt reset by charging the battery either as I said i charged it for 24 hours.

    Please do this first.

Thanks for the advice, but they had me try that and several other things before they decided I needed to send it in. Also it was at full charge and plugged in when it died...

I'll let everyone know what it was when they tell me, if they ever send the shipping information I'm supposed to receive.

i have found that Asus tech support is one of greatest team to deal with. prompt response, and they pay for the shipping. (overnight). and you should expected one week turnaround.

They've been very responsive and helpful so far. I didn't receive the instructions and RMA number email because my ISP bounced it, seeing as I hadn't downloaded my mail in 3 days (since my Thunderbird email program was on the laptop my in-box was full). I called them up and they gave me the info over the phone so I sent it off today.

Heck, I'm like 20 minutes from Fremont (or two-and-a-half hours depending on traffic) I should have just offered to drop it off. Anyway, they'll get it tomorrow and I should hear something next week.
