    G'day all

I have recently purchased the M50vc and I am very pleased with it. It has Vista Premium installed and although the OS is okay, I would prefer to revert to XP. Are there any major issues in "downgrading" to XP? I haven't really found too many comments about doing this little exercise. I'm pretty savvy with computers so I can tackle this provided I have the right guidance.

Most literature (ASUS spec sheet and a couple of posts on the ASUS forums) I have read about this model seems to indicate that XP drivers will be the issue.

    Any comments greatly appreciated.

    Regards

    Joe

If you can get all the drivers, why not. List as many components as you can, and try to find the drivers.

No I haven't yet. Still working up the nerve. :) Besides, to be fair, I want to give Vista a bit more of a go. It's kinda growing on me...once I solved a few "low on memory issues".

Questions tho: Why would ASUS not have a downgrade option for this machine M50vc? If I downgraded myself, how does this affect warranty?

Cheers and thanks for the downgrade guide. Very well done!

    Cheers

    Joe

    Hi all

I bit the bullet and did the downgrade to XP. Thanks to the excellent guides and information on this forum, it went very smoothly. I am now re installing the other software that I use.

    Thanks to all.

    Happy in Perth

Hello, I'm new at this forums and I'm thinking of buying an Asus M50Vc, the one with the 9300 gs nvidia.

Did you need any drivers apart from the nvidia one in order to install win xp? I only have this driver and I was wondering if all the other components will work with windows' generic drivers, or if I need any other ones, and where to get them (wifi, Lan, audio...). I'd really appreciate your help.

Welcome to the forum! Yes, there's a few others the M50 needs for XP.

Details can be found in this thread, which was also linked further up in this thread in EBE's first post. Details are further down in GenTechPC's initial thread post where he discusses what's needed for XP and what won't work.

Thank you very much! I had already seen that post, but I thought the model was different (I'm looking for m50vc drivers and the link you gave me takes to m50sv ones).

If you can confirm whether they work for the m50vc, I'd be very grateful.
BTW, the wifi driver moved to ( i won't write http slash slash because I can't post url's yet )downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?strState=LIVE&ProductID=2753&DwnldID=16979&agr=Y&lang=eng

Sorry for being so persistant, but the thing is that this is what will help me decide between the m50vc or another laptop (we don't want vista and want to make sure that we will be able to downgrade when we buy it).

Thank you very much for all the info and quick reply.

Depending on how proficient you are with a computer, I would say give it a try. I think many drivers will indeed work between the two models. You may need to do some scavenging for others though.

I just posted the same, but yes you can install XP on this model
Most of the drivers that are hard to find can be got in the M51A XP download section.
I still can't get the IR remote control driver working but that's the only thing.

I would love to know the value of the factory-installed partition (Half the Hard Drive!). Did you XP downgraders format it or leave it?

And by the way, do other M50V owners hear a high pitched intimitant sound?

The partitioned hard drive helps preserve your data if and when your OS is corrupted. ie. if your C:\ drive with the OS is corrupted, none of the other file in your other partitions are affected, and the drive's data can be salvageable.
