    Hi,

This is my review of my M3Np...

    First, the specs..

    Asus Barebone and Asus ODD
    +
Intel Pentium M 1.4 Ghz processor
    512 MB ram DDR 266Mhz
    30GB 4200rpm HDD
Intel pro 2200b/g mini pci card

    Physical Build:
    --------------
Weight: approx 5.5 lb with all accessories.
    Dimensions: approx 1.1" thin
I should say that this laptop could easily pass of as an ultraportable. It is quite light in weight and could probably turn out tops in the 14.1" screen category. Asus has not compromised on the quality either. The material used is very good. Though at first you might feel the laptop is flimsy and you may doubt it's durability, it is built to last. I would like to forewarn the potential buyers of this laptop not to buy the barebone without the Asus ODD. the drive slot only accomodates the asus drive. which is an standard toshiba samsung drive with osme sort of metal spacer surrounding it and it also comes with a unique bezel.
The best thing is, the laptop is very appealing and very good to look at from close angles.

    Performance:
    -----------
Asus is known for it's excellent quality motherboards and make. This laptop is no exception. it has an 855 gme chipset, is able to handle most common video and audio demands. But Intensive gamers should be looking for the bigger cousin M6ne. The laptop plays DVD movies smoothly without any problem.
Win xp with sp2 runs smooth and fast. All through my software installation, there was not a single problem with any of the hardware components or were there any conflicts.
The display is quite good running at xga and 1024 by 780 pixels.

    Battery Life:
    -------------
Asus includes a power gear software, which controls the battery life vs performance. it has many modes such as Super Performance, HIgh performance, Gaming, DVD mode, office/email mode and battery saving mode. these modes basically adjust the brightness of the LCD and power to the various components on the laptop and thereby increasing or decreasing the battery life. On high performance the battery life is approximately 4+ hours. on office/email mode, the m3np gives a good 5.5 hours.

Overall, I love this laptop. It is a good alternative to the so-called branded portables out there.

I will post some pics later. I did not give a comprehensive review of the laptop. but I hope you would have found this review helpful.

Great review. You forgot to talk about the heat it produces though... because a lot of people want to know how hot their notebooks will be (on their lap, of course)
Can't wait until those pics...[ :)]

    Hi,

M3np does not heat up so much as the other laptops i have seen. I have used a sony vaio with a p4 processor and also a toshiba satellite series laptop. M3np heats up far less than these models. but a more justifiable comparison of the heat factor would be to compare the m3np with other centrino based laptops. Maybe the centrino based models were designed to give up less heat than others.

The m3np can be kept on the lap without having any scars/burns on skin. :). But my main concern is blocking the air flow by keeping it on the lap.

    Describing the physical setup...
The fan is located on the top left corner on the bottom side. The fan is designed to suck in air(this is what I observed) from the bottom and it blows this air through the arrangement of parallel copper plates(located adjacent to the fan) and air goes out through the side vents.

    Diagramatically

    ||| -> represents parallel copper plates

    - -> the copper plates connected to the processor
    x -> represents processor

    ^
_| -> represents air flow from bottom (air sucked in by the fan from bottom)

^ air flows out thru side vents
    |
    --------------------
    ^ ||||- |
    _| |FAN x |
    | |
    | |
    | |
    | |
    | |
    | LAPTOP |
    --------------------

    Hope this discussion helps....
