    I have a w3v and I'm looking for a replacement. I know I'm asking a lot but I'm looking for a 15.4, 1680 x 1050 with discrete graphics for under <6lbs. Does it exist?

    3.1kg = 6.8lbs

    As for 15" w/ 1650 x 1050 resolution under 6 lbs, I don't think Asus currently offers any.

However, the 15" with your requested resolution include the G1S, M50Sa-AK023C (not available from Asus resellers, but can be found on newegg), C90S, and V1Sn.

The only 15.4" notebook from any manufacturer with that weight restriction (<6 lb) I'm aware of is the MacBook Pro, I think.

Manufacturers tend to publish weights without battery, because no it doesn't. In Sager's case, that might be just the chassis shell weight since everything about a Sager is custom built?

Random question - how do you guys carry you laptop?

The reason I ask is that a 6 or 7lb in a backpack is no problem but backpacks are ugly. The same 6 or 7 lb carried by hand gets heavy after 20 minutes of walking (my walk to school).

    Just curious.

    Thanks.

I'm really confused now - looks like there are a lot of laptop updates happening this summer and I'm not sure whether this is the appropriate time to bite the bullet. Anything upcoming for the Asus that I should know about?

I really hate to say this... but Asus current line is a shadow of its former self, with few exceptions.

Specs wise, something newer and "better" will always be just around the corner... build quality wise, all I'm seeing is a bunch of wonky looking trash coming down the pipe. Nothing even close to the quality of the W,V, and U series.

In my not even remotely humble opinion, the V1S or V1Sn is where its at. Nice looking, low profile, excellent screen, and respectable gaming performance. The V1Sn comes with Penryn and the 9500M GS stock I believe, so you *should* get lower temps and a bit more battery life out of it than the vanilla V1S.

    Ahh - that's too bad.

I'm finding it incredibly hard to find a good looking (w3v was a good looking laptop), decently priced (close to 1000), 15.4" laptop at 1680 x 1050 with decent battery life. I've spent more than 10 hours searching on various sites and still no luck.

Here's what I've found so far.
Dell 1530 - I've come close to buying this several times, but the wierd silver paint on the keyboard panel looks wierd and dell is not known for it's paint quality.

Sony CR - Not a 15.4 but I love the look of this laptop - clean lines, beautiful keyboard and looks amazing in the Sangria color combo but only 1280 x 1024 res. The SZ is another good looking laptop but with 1440 res on a 15.4, that's a no go.

Sager - My first laptop I bought for myself was a 3790 so I know they are good. But the the latest versions have a 15.4 with 1280 x 1024? WTF? Design is good but again, the silver paint on keyboard panel is wierd.

Summary: Sony CR, SZ come closest to what I consider good looking laptops but not high enough res

Sager / Asus : Great experience with both. Owned a 3790 and now own a W3V and love the uniqueness of both when compared to the Dell's and Apples out there.

Dell : Seem to be getting all the attention with their XPS line and it's slowly starting to get closer to what I want but still..something's holding me back.

I'd stay away from the Sony CR series. I find it to be extremely cheap and the keyboard has the most flex out of all the laptops I've seen. Take a look at your local sony store or Best Buy and check for yourself ;) . Also, the Sony SZ is a 13".

It's tough going from a W3 series book to anything else... that was quite simply the pinnacle of Asus ensemble line. For some its the V6, and they've got a case worth hearing. Neither were without their quirks, but just everything about them screamed quality.

Given your requirements, I think you're going to have a tough time finding something in the price range you're looking for. 1000 and below really is ghetto PC territory.

Haha! That's exactly the conclusion I'm coming to Devil Kai.

Still deciding between, 15.4" at 1680 or 14.1" at 1440 and the deciding factor will be how close I can get either one withe everything I want (looks, price, speed) etc.

But - let's say that I extended the budget from $1000 to $1250 - does that add any new options?

I saw some laptops that would be worth a look if they weren't Dell's on engadget today... something about a mid-range machine between the Inspiron and XPS lines. Looks a little W2'ish, which isn't a bad thing at all.

You do have options with Asus in that price range, but like I said, I think its going to feel like a steep step down from your W3.

If I had to pick one, I'd probably try the M50SV-A1 (I think BTOTech has it listed for 1300). 1440x900 resolution screen, but it's probably the most acceptable to me in terms of aesthetics. Maybe some owners can chime in about the build quality.

The resolution is unfortunately a no -go. I used to have a Sager with 1680 on a 15.4 and I just can't go lower. I'd rather get a 14".

After our conversation here, i've upped my budget and I am close to deciding on the Sager 2092

Yea, the new Dells (the Studio line) was "leaked", so you won't see it in production any time soon... maybe 6months to a year?

But like Kai said, the M50Sa-A1 is a pretty decent system. Check out GentechPC as they have a special promotion with a free 7gb SSD expresscard with the M50 purchase.

EDIT: sorry, didn't see your last post. In that case, there's also a 1650x1050 screen for the M50 too, but only available through newegg. Link here
