Ok, I have the following problem and maybe someone can explain it to me:
Out of the blue my laptop screen shows some weird display (please links below).
I was using it before, everything fine, went away for 30 min, came back, and it was "broke".
Tried switching it off and on, nothing. It starts immediately from power-on, so I guess not driver related.
It goes from black with the white blur in the middle, to lighter. Then Windows starts, and when showing the desktop its like the "screen4w picture". You can see something, but completely unusable..

The laptop is an Asus Z99sc, and the video card a NVidia 8400G M. A couple of days ago i was checking the GPU temperature and it was on average 74 degrees. Is this too high for idle situation? Can this cause the video card to break?

My external screen on the VGA-port is functioning correct, so then it could be maybe the screen?

    Thanks a lot!

It looks like you have a faulty gpu the nvidia 8400 and 8600 have faulty soldering , and are known to fail.

You can check if it is the gpu by connecting the notebook using the vga output connector to an external monitor, if you still get a garbled picture the gpu is most likely faulty.

If it is in warranty get it repaired, some manufactures have an extended warranty on the nvidia faulty gpu problem.

    Can you double check that?

The 8400m has a known fault, just google it.

You have to keep it really cool, change the thermal paste and clean out dust.
Update to the latest BIOS, this may speed up the fan.

Anyway, if you say the external screen works perfectly, you should try re-seating the screen cables.

The external screen works perfectly! That's what surprises me.

But yes, updating bios/fan speed, i don't know if that would solve it: the screen is weird from the moment i start up my laptop (cold)... And i'm even wondering if the asus has a gpu fan...

    but i'll check it, thanks!

I don't see how it can be the GPU if your external display is fine. 74C is high for an idle temp, though. These cards do have some issues, but that does not appear to be the problem. Looks like a problem w/your LCD to me, but I'm no expert, just guessing.

    Good luck!
