Is an Asus G50vt Refurb still the best gaming laptop for the price?

Sorry to bring up a discussion about an old laptop that's been discontinued but I am considering buying a refurbished G50vt-x1 and I am concerned whether my money could be better spent elsewhere. But, for a little over 700$ this laptop seems like the best deal at the moment even though it is refurbished and has only a 3 month warranty.

So I was wondering what you guys thought? Is there any deal that's better out there?

Is it worth it to spend another 100$ or so to extend the warranty? Has anyone had problems with theirs?

Also, should I pick the x5 instead? I don't like the cover as much and I think the X1 is better because of the faster processor.

a while back there was a refurbished gateway fx up for like 800, but i think theyre probably gone by now. Look into the MSI' notebooks maybe?

Which MSI notebook are you referring to? I remember checking out the MSI ex625 (similarly priced to the Asus G50vt) and the Asus still had the better graphics card and I think the better processor too.

It is the best 15inch gaming laptop for the price. Its arguable on 17 inch laptops depending on the various Gateway models that may or may be available.

Why not just save up the money for another month, throw a couple hundred extra in there, and get a really good *new* lappy with a warrenty?

I have the g50vt refurb off tigerdirect. Its a great notebook for the price. I play mainly source based games and I can max everything and vsync at 60fps easily. Out of the box you can flash the 9800m gs to gts speeds for a nice little performance boost. I OC'd the stock cpu to 2.5ghz and undervolted to 1.05 volts with zero problems. I might try pushing a little more but Im pretty stoked with it right now. Down the road Im looking at throwing in a SSD and probably a t9600+ in for some crazy performace. Hopefully someone will figure out how to throw in a g51 backlit keyboard as well.

Needless to say, Id definitely recommend it.

i think its still the best deal, i got mine from tigerdirect, the g50vt-x5 for $720 and it has a bing cashback of $74 so it comes out to about $650... of course i have to wait 60 days untill i can collect that $74 but still, i think its the best deal.

also, cj3waker, how did you OC it to 2.5? I'm gonna try to OC mine too, what program did you use? or did you do it from the bios

did you get the x1 or x5?

I was going for the x1 initially because it looked a little coller and has a slightly faster cpu but then i bought the x5 because it has a longer lasting batter (9 cell vs 6cell for the x1)

The Best Buy right by my house might still have a display model Gateway FX for like $750. I would have been tempted to pick it up, but I'd rather have a new G51, and their's was a bit beat up what with being on display for a good few months and being strapped down by that metal pole and stuff...
