I have the G71 (and I love it, love it, love it :) ). No complaints about this laptop at all, except maybe that there's no volume button. That's just a little thing though.

What bothers me, and I know it's not just Asus that does this, it's a Vista thing - is that you can't record "what you hear" through the sound card. For example, sometimes bands I like will do a live streaming concert. I don't really need the video, but I'd like to be able to record audio of the concert. Or audio from myspace, or audio from youtube, or anything really.

My old (circa 2002) Sony Vaio could do it, no problem. The HP laptop I bought in 2007 (it died in April 2009, and I bought my new Asus G71 a week ago today) couldn't do it at first. I downloaded Audacity, but it just wouldn't work. I then downloaded a few different programs that were supposed to make it so that you could do it, and then one day I opened Audacity, and it suddenly worked! I could record streaming audio! Even after I deleted the third party program, it still worked. Friends said it must have installed a driver or something. The thing is, my HP is dead, so I can't get in there and see what programs I downloaded to make this happen.

So now, my Asus. I went into sounds and right clicked and showed disabled devices, and enabled 'stereo mix'. I chose it as the device to use. But it's still not working - when I try to use Audacity to record, I do get sound, but it's really, REALLY low - you can barely hear it. I've tried adjusting levels everywhere, to no avail.

Is there anything I can do to make this work? I tried Freecorder - it didn't work. If someone could help me I'd appreciate it soooooo much :)

When recording stereo mix, it is post master volume. In other words, master volume will control how loud the recording is.

Use Windows recorder! go to start> search all programs and files and search for sound recorder
