I've installed the latest vista's update - via the win' update - tagged KB915597 (definition 1.31.9309.0) entitled 'Definition Update for Windows Defender'.

After restarting i got that black screen saying that windows didn't restart properly..continuous restarts resulted in the same black screen.

Again, system restore did the trick.
    Any idea's?

Don't install the update if it's causing trouble. I had a series of updates that caused BSODs.

    Great advice.
Can I presume you have series of dead notebooks caused by series of updates?

Try to restart it in SAVE mode. If you can do it, you are pretty save.
Ask somebody to restore OS to workable conditions or use enclosed 'restore' disk to restore your OS to a factory conditions

As far as I can understand, Desert Seagull already solved the problem using System Restore. I'm not sure he meant the System Restore in Windows; or whether he did a full recovery to factory settings.

Also, not installing updates that killed the OS the first time around seems to me to be very sound advice. :)

What the French toast? No, I don't have a series of dead notebooks caused by a series of updates. I booted up in Safe Mode, and uninstalled all my recent updates (there were a lot, because I had just reinstalled Windows). I then installed them in small groups until I got the BSOD, and then uninstalled the last group, and then installed those one by one until I isolated three of them that caused BSODs.

Agree, I did not get it. I thought there is typeO otherwise there is no reason for the post.

Nobody knows in advance whether Official updates will (or will not) kill OS. I still get updates for my old W2K and never ever had problems.

I wouldn't blame updates for what has happened. There is another reason behind the crash.

    I'm not sure I follow.

Indeed, some more testing needs to be done to determine precisely if it was that update that caused the Windows to malfunction. However, if trouble started just after the restart caused by the update, there's actually a pretty good chance it was the update that killed Windows. So no, I wouldn't state unequivocally that it is definitely another reason behind the crash.

I've meant the Win' system restore. sorry for the unclarity about that. I've re-installed the update and so far so good. have no idea what might have triggered this malfunction (didn't install any program etc.). Perhaps a bad shutdown though i highly doubt it.

EDIT: I've installed the update and didn't restart immediately afterwards (it never asked me to). The day after i plugged a DOK and a Maxtor OneTouch (music), burned some dvd's (nero) and that's about it. After the first time I restarted - when I first got the BSOD, I tried to open sys-restore though Windows failed to open it. The task-manager wouldn't open either. After a couple more restarts I managed to open Windows' sys-restore and wrote down here.

Then indeed it can be something different than the update that caused the problems. Well, good it's solved, anyway.
