I have the same laptop unfortunatly the recovery cd puts the computer to factory settings reinstalling the vista also reinstalling the bloatware. I suggest that u manually remove bloatware if ure gonna use vista. If you can though i suggest installing xp. I did and my laptop is flying right now :D here is a good info guide for g1s

well depends factory settings everything is installed and u dont have to do anything on initial boot but i bought my g1 from gentech and had the 160gb 7200rpm upgrade and the hdd was blank so i had to use the recovery cd to get the os in there. in other words everything is installed if you wanna remove bloatware remove em or reformat and when it asks you to enter the driver cd DONT, this will prevent installing bloatware.

type run into the search bar and press enter and run will well run! :)
System config is msconfig, or services if you want to access all detailed services.

I must've missed this somewhere in the threads, so let me confirm. Basically, what you are saying is I can re-install Vista on my G1s using the recovery CD without bloatware as long as I don't insert the driver CD during the recovery process? I can then install the drivers seperately once inside Vista?

^ Yeah its called a clean install. You are resetting your computer back to its original settings. Then after you you are done, once the OS is running you just put in the drivers cd and pick and choose which drivers/utilities you want to install.

GS1 owners that doesnt work with gs1 once you put in the driver cd it automaticly installs bloatware. as for the question of the other guy. yea when you do recovery after it installs windows it asks you for driver cd dont put it in and continue after that you need to make ur own driver cd cuz vista wont boot and u boot from that and install everything on that cd. sometimes i managed to get vista to boot so u might not need to do that.

I suppose you should check for dead/ stuck pixels. But my question is how many is too much?

I have a question for those who just got their G1S. Is a certain number of stuck, dark pixels normal on a WSXGA 15.4" screeen? I switched the background to white and went over the screen with a magnifying glass and you can definitely count about 20 pixels in various states of stuckness (some are gray, others have a color to them, a few are totally dark).

I switched the background to black and thankfully nothing jumped out at me.

I've read these dark pixel threads where everyone has these perfect screens. Has anyone tried to look at them with a magnifier? You can't see these pixels unaided.

I actually need to use this for work about right now so I cant undergo yet another cycle of shipping, hoping and waiting. Its been a 4 month saga trying to get a maxed out laptop for work. A Toshiba failed out of the box, then the compals were delayed because of QC problems....then I ordered the G1S.

Does anyone know what is normal for WSXGA 15.4" laptop screens regarding dark/ stuck pixels?

According to Asus, G1s come with a 30day no dead pixel warranty. As for mine, I don't see any dead-pixels....but then again, I'm looking through the magnifier.

Are you referring to the Magnifier program or an actual magnifying glass? To inspect pixels you need a magnifying glass. The Magnifer program tells you what the software is commanding the screen to do, not how the acutal pixel is responding.

I did the black, red, green, blue desktop background thing. Solid colors produced the best result. Using the black background I found no hot pixels. Using RGB I found 2 or three pixels that did not have the background color.

But use the white background. I suppose this is the most difficult test, because to produce white, the pixels have to be in perfect balance. With white what I found is about 20 pixels that could not produce this perfect balance. Most were gray, some had a color to them. A few were dark.

In total there were no hot pixels and maybe 2 or 3 dark ones. (I'm defining dark as meaning a pixel which cannot produce any color.) What you will find is a lot of pixels in between hot and dark: meaning there are pixels which do not produce the same shade of color as their neighbors. Using the white background, this results in grey pixels or pixels with a color to them.

Go over the screen using the white, red, green, blue and black background. Look at the pixels with a phsyical magnifying glass. Report what you find.

I'd like to know what I should expect from a WSXGA 15.4" produced with todays state of the art.
